I have a V 90 modem made by US robotics. it is a fax/data modem... I want to squeeze all the speed it can handle out of it.   I will buy another modem if I have to... but i think going to DSL is just too damn expensive (Like $45+tax a month here.) I have good phone lines, on the modem I have, I get about 39.6kbps-44.6kbps with no compression (even though i have modem compression checked off in the settings box)  How can I bring that up and around 52.3kbps with say around 50-75% compression...

My server is sympatico, and the server type is PPP

I tried everything to get my modems to go faster to no avail.

I just set everything to windows default now and it seems fine, When I set up the connection, I ran the connection wizard and didn't use the ISP's installation disc, it was a faster connection that way.

I changed to an external modem and my modem connects at 48kbs all the time now, I get stable gaming with a reasonable ping and can host CFS2 for hours at a time.

I have heard that External Modems are better. Anyone know if this is true or not?

There is a free tool out there michael called TCPOptimizer available from http://www.speedquide.net. Even though the download says broadband, it has an option for dial up connections too. Just select "Dial Up" and then "Optimal" and then hit "Apply Settings". This little tool has helped many with better data transfer rates for online gaming. It basically removes any bottlenecks you might have in your modem.
