What do you think is the best buy at the moment??

P4s or those AMD 2600+s (Or over)

Cost vs Speed and all that... I've heard P4s aren't all that fast....

I don't want any of that "The new P4s are supposed to be fast" talk, just tell me what you have now and what you think....

And I am hella sure an AMD rig would cost me less.........

AMD machines are generally faster and cheaper than Pentium machines. I paid less for my new Duron 950 machine than I did for my old Pentium2 MX 233. Also with AMD mother boards are more versitile. With my ECS K7S5A, I can upgrade to a Athlon XP if I wanted to.

When it comes to processors AMDs and Apple G4s tend to be the best on the market. I should note that the G4 is fast, however it is very expensive.  

It's already established that you get more power for the Dollar with AMD.

Reliability is not an issue,, AMD has been around too long to question that..

BUT,,  There are some quirks (so I've heard).  Little things that noone can really explain, but they seem to haunt AMD.  

I had an XP2000 with a GF4MX440 card and the damn machine would never properly shut down after running RogerWilco,,  SURE ENOUGH,, at RogerWilcos "Issues" site,, the first issue listed was AMD/GF4  and odd shut down problems,,  but admittedly no explaination..  hmmmmm

But that shut-down problem wasn't anything too big that caused major trouble was it??

I've heard too many people complaining the P4s are really slow for their clock speed....

No, it wasn't a big problem,, and I found a way around it (messed around with the system.ini stuff in "msconfig")

But if you aren't careful, you can really screw things up. The alternative (just living with odd shut-downs when running RW) isn't good either, as that eventually punches holes in your system rendering it "unstable" (even by Windows standards)  ;)


When it's all said and done, I'm still a BIG fan of AMD. Just too much power for the money.  Both coming and going. You can make 3 "speed" upgrades with AMD for every 2 with Pentium,  so it's a no-brainer.
