I just spotted this long thread. I don't bother with selective startup. Try this little utility named EnditAll2.

Run it before using the sim to safely shut down all unnecessary background applications. One click saves all that messing about. Very handy when installing new software too.

I use both selective startup and enditall. Darn sneaky programs!  >:(

[quote]Brensec, quoting you above:

First, to change startup go to "Start" and hit "Run", type in "msconfig" and select "startup". You will get a list of boxes to tick or un-tick for programs you want to have on automatically when the P.C. is turned on. I have only
"DXM6patch, CMEsys, and System tray activated as I'm told these have to be left on (do they?). Then restart.

DXM6patch looks like a directX 6 patch to me......

Brensec. As I remember, CFS2 installs DX7 by default. CFS3 installs DX8.2 beta which caused all the conflicts & problems. The DX6 patch might have been installed with a Windows Update when you first had your PC. As you now have DX9 it's no longer a valid entry.

Earlier versions of DX could be overwritten by a previous version which is no longer the case. This often caused problems when installing older versions of software.
For example, I think CFS1 installed the latest (at the time) DX5 which it needed to run properly. If you or someone else later installed an earlier sim like Red Baron which might install DX3 by default, you might well have "unexplained" problems running CFS1.
I forget exactly when this was changed to the current system to prevent this happening, maybe with a DX6 update, 6.1 or 6.2.

So is there any way to get the DX6 patch out altogether.
I have done a system search and there are no folders or files that include DX6 or any variant spacing etc.   ;D ;)

Thanks
