WinXP is dialing onto the internet by itself

WinXP is dialing onto the internet by itself and I can't figure out why.

I've opened up the internet options and under connection, made sure that the 'never dial a connection' is selected. I've also made sure that Getright is set to never dial into the internet.

I've looked for something else, but I'm out of ideas.

This is driving me nuts!

Open Windows Messenger

Select Tools/Options/Preferences tab

uncheck Run this program when Windows starts

Windows is still dialing in every once in a while even when both MSN & Getright are closed, anyother ideas?

Check all your network connections to make sure an internet dialler hasnt installed. I just got a massive phone bill and am in arbitration over some rotten software that installed on my system.

I opened up the properties for my ISP network connection, and I made sure that the option to "Establish a dial-up connection whenever on my computer on my network attempts to access the internet" is disabled.

I also have the option to "Allow other network users to controll or disable the shared internet connection" disables as well.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Make sure there are no other connections listed other than your isp connection. Set the connections for " dial my default connection only" .

If the software is using your default connection, see what page is it going to, this may help you trace it, say to a music download program like kazza etc.

See if you can disable the offending software, (and many other things as well ) in your startup options.

Run your antivirus, anti-trojan software and ad-aware if you have it.

Good Luck!

I am writing this now on a connection made by my new WinXP computer 3 hours ago in my absence.

Right-click on the little symbol next to the time in the bootom right corner says:
"Downloading updates 23% complete"

That would be the selection for WinXP to do automatic updates when the system is idle.   My very slow internet connection is mostly occupied doing slow downloads of flightsim add-ons for CFS1, CFS2 and now CFS3.  It is not very often that WinXP would find an opportunity to connect itself but I caught him this time.

ok, I opened it up and disabled the option to dial in by itself. I'll try it and hopefully that's it.

Thanks for the help!
