My latest System is Windows 8.1 which came bundled with my latest tower computer.
(Previously I had Windows 7...and before that, XP...which was nice...but SLOW!)
The very first thing I did in Windows 8, was to get rid of that awful desktop (touch screen?) display, and make all my files and folders display in the old Win '98/XP Mode...

...ie: Classic Mode!... ...!

..including my Start Menu...with its proper Start Button! ...>>> http://www.classicshell.net/

So, I suppose, for me, the only real advantage of the later versions is the gradual increase in operating "speed"!

...but I still prefer Z80 Assembly Code and "Sinclair BASIC" over all others!... ...>>>>

Paul....lost in the mists of time!... ...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

We all seem to forget the issue of HARDWARE in here.

Bear in mind that the guys from AMD, INTEL, ASUS, NVIDIA etc etc are also constantly in the process of new developments, new innovation and new technology.

There are ongoing and constant communications between the hardware and the software guys and this is vitally important, for this is what has taken us from, as an example, the old 80286 running at 20Mhz
to the latest Ivy bridge, running almost at 4Ghz stock..

Too often here we seem to overlook the real geniuses, in my opinion, and they are the physicists at Intel, AMD and all the others, constantly looking for the next level.

But their efforts would be in vain without the software guys and software development..

In the end we all benefit from this ongoing parallel innovation and developments.

Lets hope we never see the day when either hardware or software development grinds to a halt..

"Moore's law" is the observation that, over the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years.

If I recall, my Speccy flight sim was green, wire-line scenery.
Oh, for the good old days when modems arrived on the scene. My first was a home-built modem. Imagine taking your telephone handset & plugging it into 2x rubber cups! I think those cups came from a plumbing supply company & were used in toilet piping. & the different beeping tones when the thing eventually connected. I cannot even remember the speed in those days (56k?), but we could judge what was happening by the change in tones.

Please note that P3D from what we encountered does not always work well with Win8 or 8.1. There is some issue in that "Win8 triggers the compatibility assistant (rundll32.exe process)" to run on P3D.exe in the "back ground non-stop using around 11% CPU resources". This will of course affect overall performance of PC and running other applications. Results may differ from pc to pc.
