FS2004 Performance on this notebook

Postby DomSQ » Wed May 15, 2013 12:33 am

Afternoon folks,

I understand most on this forum are now FSX users given times have changed in terms of hardware. However my question is completely different given my current situation being I am travelling overseas and will be working overseas regularly with my job, as such I need a notebook to get some valuable simming time in, between leisure and work time.

My mission on this one is to simply find a notebook/laptop only to be able to take FS9 (Not interested in FSX for a mobile PC).

Now I've took the plunge and already bought an ASUS G73SW notebook with the unfortunate "gimping" Best Buy version of the GTX 460M (1GB). Only reason I bought this is because I got it at an insanely low price including a fitted SSD drive and two warranties which cover me for 2 years. Throw in a bunch of freebies like a second 750GB 7200RPM HDD and laptop bag and I was sold. This was only supposed to be very budget like laptop to simple use FS9 on the go nothing more permanent in it.

Now down to the question, I hope some would be kind enough to chime in and just tell me exactly what kind of performance I can expect with FS9 + Addons on this mobile rig as I am not too well up with mobile PC's, Desktop is a different story though. Thank you

SPECIFICATIONS

Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz with the Sandy Bridge chipset - 2.00GHz CPU, 6MB L3 Cache Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz

(1GB *Though gimped from the 1.5GB version of the card) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M DDR5

PERFORMANCE OF THE CARD BELOW:

Fs9 will catch you like a charm ;)

But the mobile connection all depends on signals....if you want to go online flying

WOW... ...!

As a regular, on-line, FS 2004/FSX Multiplayer, that's something I have never thought of before!

Of course, ...the Laptop uses Satellite stations and ISP for transmitting wireless data to and fro, whereas my Desktop/Tower computer uses a copper telephone land-line and ISP its for Data!

Paul...never used a Laptop Computer... ...!

Thanks guys, the old reliable FS9 users, not interested in online flying though, just offline for my own use with addons. By FS9 catching me like a charm, you mean I can expect solid performance with addons like PMDG maxed? Obviously with Nicks tweaks applied.

Its like everything else...

My 8-year old Tower computer, with its 2.8 GHZ, Dual-core, Pentium 4 processor, and nVidia GF 9500GT 2GB graphics card, will run my FS 2004 like a charm, with all my sliders, etc, maxed, and Frame Rate locked at 22 FPS....

...until I come across some add-on, highly complex scenery, etc.
The the computer will then grind to an almost (<5 FPS) standstill, giving me the choice to either reduce some of my graphics settings, suffer the consequences, or remove the offending scenery, etc, back to default, or something more suitable!

With care in what I install/add/on, my set-up runs FS 2004 very smoothly, with just about everything maxed, both on-line and off-line!

Its all trial-and-error!.... :D ...!

Paul..FS 2004 + FS Navigator....!

It certainly runs my FS 2004 infinitely SMOOTHER than my FSX!

Paul said it, Trial and Error ;)
Dont be too consistent on having everything maxed out. It will not allways give the best result! ;)

Thanks Bass and Paul.

Believe me lads or gentlemen...

I have been through all of FS9's glorious trial and error terror with my custom built desktop rig : C2D E6750, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 8800GTS 640MB

Which has always served me wonderfully in FS9. I just have no idea with notebooks, logic would tell you those notebook specs I've listed will likely give FS9 more power than my desktop PC given the i7 and more RAM given the 64bit system. I just am getting restless (Wish the damned thing would get delivered, 3 days left  )

It'll be a sad day when I say goodbye to my old trustful desktop, obviously when I go away.

I will say this, that notebooks got big shoes to fill!

He-he.
<<q Guess Ill just have to ride through the turbulence and see what the flight path brings.
