I plan to get a job as soon as I can, hopefully have it until Vista comes out and save the money up, Get Vista when its out and build a computer around it...... Sure I might be crazy, but it will have been 5 years with XP... Time for a change I think...... Besides, I dont care if an OS is buggy, if it works, it works, if games play, I can come to the V, Have fun, Not need to punt the computer from here to lake michigan, I'll be happy, I wouldnt build a computer until possibly november at the earliest, maybe wait until the end of year sales at newegg etc in 2007  ;D I tend to be a bit of a budget shopper sometimes! Cheers, Gunny

Hi Congo.

The reason i want the 7900GT EXTREME edition is because it has a pretty good price, and the specs look pretty neat.

As for the CPU.. I have listened to all of your advise, and i just dont feel confident on overclocking my CPU. Maybe its just me, but i feel i just want to "Buy it and leave it". So i either get the AMD 64 3700+ or the AMD 64 4000+..Maybe i should decide at the time of buying?
What i want to know is, will the AMD 64 4000+ be still as powerful in around a year or two time?
This is why im trying to go for the best CPU i can at the moment.

I will take your advice about the motherboard. I think i will also decide on my motherboard when the time comes to buy my system.

As for now, im really looking forward to my new system!

One thing i have been wondering is, with my new proposed system, how much percentage increase am i going to get in FS, than the system i have now? Just an estimate really. And also, will an Antec 550W PSU do the Job for my new system? ;)

Thanks very much for your help again.

I would imagine the performance of your planned rig would easily be threefold to what you are experiencing now, possibly more, but I obviously haven't seen your rig in action. I'm basing this estimate on a 3700+ / 7800GT combo I built late last year. In non urban areas, that rig was pumping out 90-100 FPS with all settings, drivers and sim, maxed out.

That video card you propose should be capable of anything that FS9 will throw at it, the CPU will be the limiting factor.

In a year or two, dual processor support will be enabled in some more sims/games,

And the best part is no Candle telling you not to waste your money on "expensive" hardware and but a 660GT with a 3200+ (no offence to any running a system like that)

But yes this thread has been some pretty good reading. We eventually need to creat a Sticky on the latest and greatest, and what to use and what not. Just so that building a PC becomes even easier.

Cheers

I would stay with the 4000+ right now, and move up to the FX-60 or 4400+ when they come down in price. By then dual core apps will be more abundant, and you will have a real use for that second core.

Hi Congo.

The reason i want the 7900GT EXTREME edition is because it has a pretty good price, and the specs look pretty neat.

I like XFX cards on paper and users report good results, on a couple of occasions I considered them myself as my next upgrade.

As for the 550W PSU, the overall power figure is only an indication and the PSU needs to supply adequate wattage on the appropriate rails. If it is a popular PSU then it's probably fine, but this depends on the load you place on it with all your components. Saying that, a quality 550W PSU should be adequate. There are others here who are more qualified to comment on PSU's than I am.

I'm a cheapskate at times and currently have my first "purpose bought" PSU, and it is a cheap chinese imitation of a quality PSU.
This PSU has a fancy blue light in it, it has auto thermal fan control and boasts reasonable figures on the rail outputs. It also has a nice finish and came with a multitude of power outlets and cables, allowing a customised and neat case installation. A case modder would be proud of it!

The PSU looks fine, but the price! That's around $165 aussie clams!

If I was religious I'd like to go to hell and be in charge of torturing retailers. Tough job, but someone's gotta do it.

The Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler is an excellent fanless cooler.  If you buy a motherboard that is known to have a faulty fan get one of these. ;)

P.S I have completed this mod on my comp after the fan started to rattle. As a result i now have a silent pc (due to the old fan being the last non-silent component).  I brought that up because congo mentioned people talking about stuff they don't have experience with.  I highly recommend this cooler.  ;)
