Seriously, don't spend on an X2 CPU, get a Conroe and wait for NForce 5.(don't hit me cuz when i ordered my rig AM2 wasn't out yet :P)

Card: save up for a 7900GT(X, maybe).

Maybe even get more RAM...

right now i have a nvidia 5200, and it runs it fine on HIGH settings, so i think the 7300 gt will be fine for now

Why do you think that? Because it has a bigger number?

I've seen a 5200, I had one, my 6600GT is ten times better and it barely gets by. So, I have no idea what you have experienced, but it's certainly not the same one that I have.   ???

Well, people have different difinitions of what "running fine" is, and what "high" settings are. You have to quantify. ;D

I heard claims that 7300GT is a little faster than 6600GT. It is true that the 7xxx cards are more efficient per clock cycle than 6xxx cards. However, the 7300LE is terrible.

If you are buying on a budget 7600GT is really cheap now. $113.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate.

I heard claims that 7300GT is a little faster than 6600GT.

And that surprised me, in fact I was taken aback by this comment, until I quickly researched it and indeed found one "7300GT", namely a Gainward Golden Sample version that does look very close to a 6600GT.

Now that particular 7300GT is a special edition which is factory overclocked and no doubt has selected GPU's and choice ram fitted, it's not the ordinary vanilla one I can assure you, and you'll find it has a much bigger price tag as well.

Again, don't confuse these better and more expensive 7300GT's with the much lamer 7300 versions, they are nowhere near the same class of card even though their 7300 designation makes them look that way.

Buyer Beware.

Ok, look above at mees signature scrolling across the bottom of his post. That's what a 5200 looks like when displaying FS9 at high settings. It ain't pretty  :P

1) The power supply that comes with the Aspire case sucks.
2) Biostar motherboards are low performance.
3) Motherboards with onboard video suck.

This is what I would get if I was going with AM2 on a budget:

Coolermaster Centurion 5 Case $45 minus $15 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811119047

Hiper 580W PSU $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817128002

EVGA 7900GS $198
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130055

WD 250GB SATA $78
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822144701

NEC 3550A $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827152058

AMD X2 3800+ $154
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103735

ASUS M2N-E $93
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131022

G.SKILL 1GB PC6400 $130 minus $10 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231085

Total: $828 minus $25 rebates = $803

I think this is a good basic setup. You can change it around to a better processor or 2GB RAM or an SLI motherboard or whatever.

I picked 1GB RAM because DDR2 RAM is bloody expensive. That G.SKILL RAM is 1GB, not 512MBx2, so when DDR2 prices drop you could add another stick later on without losing speed.

No, no, and just no. Your missing an OS disk for starters, also many of those parts are very low quality. If you want a  good rig that is going to last you a long time, take a look at what I am about to spec. Yes its $211 over your budget, but to get a good rock solid gaming rig, $1000 is a very hard budget to meet, but I think I did pretty goot.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400

Motherboard: Gigabute GA-965P-DQA

RAM: OCZ 1GB Platnum ED DDR2-800

GPU: eVGA 7900GS

Hard Drive: Western Digital 160GB SATA3

Optical Drive: Samgsung 18x DVD+/-RW

Case: Lian Li PC7

PSU: Hiper Type R

Keyboard: Logitech EX110

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Total + shipping = $1257.32

Now you can drop about $100 ~ $200 off that price by not getting the keyboard, or getting a cheaper case, or not getting WinXP.  However something like that would be a much better setup than anything suggested. The other nice thing is its $1260 now, but nothing until DX10. Also that mobo is a nice solid platform, and half of buying the computer is getting a very very good mobo, everything else is easy to get later on.

Cheers

Low quality? Turning your back on G.SKILL RAM?

I know, it has too much SKILL for you. That's it isn't it? You can't handle the SKILL.

@Cameron,

Why the E6400 and DQ6? An E6300 is a far better choice and will clock just as far. The DQ6 board is not really needed either, the C2D will clock just as high on the DS3.

That's $333 instead of $466. Easy saving of $133 :D

The motherboard has a soundcard built in, you don't need to spend extra on a superfluous one.

Also, unless you are going to seriously overclock that system, you don't require a serious overclocking mainboard. HOWEVER, you will certainly want to go to an E6600 cpu if you plan on running stock because the lesser models aren't all that great at stock speeds.
