[quote]I'm going ahead and taking Sukhoi's advice.

I will ignore Cheesegrater and Nick's advice against the better judgement of my common sense, and hope I can apply y'all's advice when I rebuild.

Scorpion, if you are building a new PC, move up to socket AM2 or LGA775, only use 939 if you are getting the parts a lot cheaper. Socket 939 is on the way out, it's ok if you have one already, but not the best for a new PC.

Examples.... note these are kinda midrange.

I think common sense dictates to get a PSU with steady voltage and good amps to protect your investment. You wouldn't want that $500 system upgrade to be destroyed by a $20 PSU.

Nick, note taken. ;) :-X

Congo, I just wanted a reasonable boost in performance via the CPU.  Something noticeable, but not jaw dropping.  Options for a socket 754 upgrade aren't very compelling, so I decided to go socket 939.  I actually searched up a post of yours (reply #7) when trying to play catch up in hardware knowledge.  I would have liked to sped up my Half Life 2 loading times.

I think I will actually abort my upgrade.  I'll just wait 'till I rebuild in mid 2007 and return the CPU.  I guess I can stomach what I have in the meantime.  I remember what my tech teacher told me in high school, though I will quote Hagar's exact words: "The only thing you'll make in a hurry is a mistake."

wise words... If you wait till 07 and you save you will have the rig you want. By then things will be clarified in the industry and what you spend will not be a waste of any kind

Maybe there is a cheap and effective upgrade possible for your present system, but we'll never know until you post your spec eh? Don't forget to include the exact mainboard model.

Then theres those such as myself who try to save up for an upgrade, and have a major piece of hardware fail on them.

And here I was thinking that smoke was a signal beacon built into the GPU! ::)

Congo, full, relevant, present specs are:
  • Athlon 64 3000+
  • K8N Neo (MS-7030)
  • 1GB DDR400
  • BFG 6800 Mfg. OC
  • 500GB SATA Mirrored RAID
  • MGE 600w (I lol now)

I recall CT has said before my CPU was quite a bottleneck, thus my previously desired upgrade.

PS: Reading my own specs, I am reminded of a quote...

This is a socket 754 3700+ single core with 1mb L2 cache. This CPU is faster than mine (stock speed) and has similar specs to a socket 939 4000+ San Diego.

They are still coming out with better and better AGP cards, It shouldn't be long before you can get a 7900 in AGP, if it's not already out yet.

With a 3700+ and a 7900GT, your

Many thanks Congo. ;) Most places list the 3700 at $200-300, so I guess I'll keep a close watch on eBay.  Hopefully I can score one for close to $100. ;)

Actually, lads. I've got the Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 board that Sukhoi recommended in the second post
http://www.asrock.com/product/939Dual-SATA2.htm , and I can tell you it's a wee belter of a board. Didn't cost much and immediatly gives your system a leg up.  One word of warning, flash the bios, because the original AGP drivers weren't the best, although it's been fixed by the bios updates.
Unfortunately I bought a AMD 64 3500+ Venice core for it JUST before the price crash...grrrr.  >:(
However, I've coupled it with a nice XFX Geforce 7600 Gt XXX Edition and things are running hunky dory for me.

3700 is $100 plus shipping on newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103539

The ASRock AGP board is $65. It has both AGP and PCI-E so you can use the 6800 now, and still be able to upgrade later.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813157081

So you could get a decent upgrade for less than $200. If you do choose to upgrade I would get a new PSU with that.

Not a socket 754 3700+ ;)

I'm trying to keep my upgrading to a minimum untill I rebuild.

I think what cheesgrater was getting at was you could get AGP/PCIe cross compatibility if you bought that mobo and therefore switched to socket 939, which isn't a bad idea if the Socket 754 3700+ upgrade proves to cost nearly that much anyway.
