I just looked over the benchmarks from the various hardware sites. I'm still not convinced because what is available for benchmarks was on systems set up, for the most part, by Intel. I don't doubt that the processor is chugging out some numbers but I am not sure what is posted is in line with real world use.

I also know the big sites such as Tom's Snardware will always sell their sole to the highest bidder so it's going to take a few months before I will be convinced Conroe is a better deal (performance + watts vs price) than AMDs offerings.

I own a dual Xeon rig so its no big deal who's whompin who in the processor game. I'll buy either.

I want to see the results on mutiple motherboards, different chipsets, different memory and different video setups. I also want to see results from MORE than those silly games Quake, FEAR, etc...

It will be at least 3-4 months before anyone can call Conroe the king. ...and I am still not convinced AMD wont pop up with a curve-ball between now and Xmas.

They have already come out with several press releases saying that they are not coming out with any more chips or cores until K8L. From here till then they are killing chipsets, and dropping prices to make up for it.

Exactly... so if AMD drops the price of the 5000+ series to at or below 400 bucks, then the cost to performance ratio is back in AMD's court.

I know the reverse HT may have been a rumor but for some reason AMD has always seemed to slip something in.

Until I see reports (and I do not mean silly benchmarks) on the real world performance of Conroe, it can sit on the shelf. Besides, by the time the REAL factor (DX10) hits the shelves, the processor sitting on top may not be Intel anymore.

That's what is important. Anyone who buys a Conroe now and does not wait for DX10 is (IMHO) throwing money out the window. By the time DX10 hits the market and is proven, Inhell may be the worse bang for the buck... AGAIN.

EDIT: And now that I think about it.. that may be exactly what AMD has up their sleeve.. let everyone get all hot and bothered over Conroe and wait to put their next hot product on the market when it really counts... when DX10 arrives!

IF that is true, there will be ALLOT of people wishing they had not bought Intel and Intel will once again get the rep for being Wayyyyy overpriced and always under powered for the money.

LOL

PS: If you want 4 gig... get this unit:

http://www.crazypc.com/products/9290.html

They say you can get as much as +50% out of any processor.

That chiller unit is similar to what I am building myself, except what I am working on chills all components, not just the processor. My system will not have an annoying hum from a compressor.

Pretty nice 8)

Intel, expensive $hit..

Cheers,
Mees - Receiving an AMD rig soon 8) 8)

lmao. And to match the Conroe X6800 performance with AMD you would need a server mobo with two CPUs in it.
Check the price on just THAT.

About the bang for buck, hey, the E6600 beats the fx-62 by 10 frames per second in F.E.A.R.

Reverse HT is not really much of an advantage on dual core, only in single threaded apps.  However with quad core (which is what i expect AMD will bring out next) reverse HT will be good to make 2 or 3 or maybe even all 4 of the cores work together to work at a thread.

For example the 2 cores work on the most demanding thread and the other 2 on the other threads.

THe inquirer calims that the reverse HT thing was an invention of a few over optomistic AMD managers and dosen't exist.. they seem very certian.

Yep... I made a call to an old classmate who sits upstairs (at least 3/4 of the way upstairs) @ AMD. He chucked about it and said rumor control had been implented BUT could not confirm or deny reverse HT may be implemented down the line. (That was his way of telling me they are indeed in the process of R&D with the technology)
