Monitor problem

So I bought this whiz-bang, 22" LCD monitor, thinking I had stepped into the 21st century. It worked fine for a while, but now whenever I turn on my machine and start FS-- or anything for that matter, I get a sound blown into my head like I am imprisoned inside a giant sewing machine. I was trying to get the resolution, brightness and image proportions right yesterday; I did something and now I get this most irritating sound. I have no idea what is the problem. All I can say is that I sure do miss my old 19" CRT, which I gave away to a friend whose old 15-inch thing had one foot in the grave. So now I'm seemingly stuck with this modern, marvelous piece of junk. It's enough to put one off his tea and crumpets...

Are you sure its coming from the monitor, and not the computer tower? I don't know why a LCD would be making noise, it has no moveing parts. Unless there is a cooling fan in yours.

I was about six lines into a detailed response about what I am experiencing, then my thumb hit some key and wiped it all out.  :'( I do not have the heart nor the time to type it over again. I have to get to bed now. Suffice to say it worked until I put in one of the two CDs that came with it for setting it up. It worked before that, now it has this high-pitched screel whenever there is a moving image on the screen. It is quiet now as I type. If I start FS or execute an mpeg, it screels. I sure do miss that old CRT...

I won't be back until Tuesday night so if anyone has any ideas, I'll read them then. Good night, gentlemen...

Sounds like there is an actual problem with the monitor. Go back and return it for a new one. Its a hastle, but it really shouldn't do that.

There's definately something wrong with it. The only noise source I can think of, would be in the monitor's power supply (where the 110v wall power gets converted into whatever the monitor uses). I've heard voltage control circuits using SCRs give off an awful racket... just before they "pop"..

Assuming this thing does not have built-in speakers, and the sound is not coming from your computer speakers, my guess would be that a cooling fan is indeed the culprit... although Brett's theory is probably equally likely.
However- it could be some silly thing, like an obstruction that can be removed, or maybe the grill is pushed in and is touching the fan or something.

I'd check that first, but it could  be a bum fan (bad bearings, etc) or PSU... I've seen that before with monitors, even right out of the box.

I hear this racket only when there is a moving image on the screen. I do not hear it when clicking through My Pictures. When FS is on Pause, it's quiet as a mouse. When I hit P, the racket comes at me like a tornado. It sounds like the static you hear when you tune to a channel on your TV that has no programming on it. It has a "beat" to it, like it's sounding out the screen redraws. The count is high, but I can hear each one. It sounds like a synthetic drum machine set to roll out an infinite number of hits. Is there any way I can make an audio file of it and put it up somewhere so you can hear it? Maybe if one of you heard it, you could identify it. I am loathe to take this thing back to Reno and get another because I got the last one; it wasn't even on the sales floor. I do not think there is a fan inside because I hear and feel nothing. I am not sure it has speakers, either. It worked fine until I put in one of the two CDs that came with it. I was trying to adjust the aspect ratio of the image of my barebreasted dreamgirl on my desktop, so I put the CD in and tried to do that. Shortly thereafter, came forth the sounds from Hell. I discovered it when I started FS not long after putting in the CD. I have been ready to put my .45 in my mouth ever since. I paid nearly $500 for this thing and I am hosed-off to such an extent that I can't put together any polite words to describe my anger.

Monitor is an LG Flatron L226WT if you want to look at it...

I thought about taking off whatever I put on with the CD, hoping that would fix it, but I don't know where to find it on my HD. I am open to any intelligent suggestions...

I still get the noise when a moving image is on the screen and the monitor is OFF. Now I'm thinking "sound card."

I have now put on the CRT my friend was using. It's old and shows signs of crapping out, but it's all I have. Unhooking my old one from his system and dragging it from his house to mine was too much trouble, so we are going with his.

The irritating sound is still there, but it is now at a higher pitch. Next thing I will try is to start a WMA video and unplug the monitor at the video card while the video is proceeding. That should tell me definitively if the problem is the monitor or the sound card, correct?

I have just now tried running a video while having first the VGA cable and then the power cable removed. The monitor is completely isolated from the computer this way. The sound continues. This can only mean the trouble is in my sound card. I also get the sound as a brief crack when I click on something. I guess I can try reinstalling the sound card drivers or just order a new one. It's a Crystal Fusion card and about four years old. I wonder if it's even still to be had out there...

When you put the monitor disk into you cdrom drive, it did something. Whatever it did was determined by the autorun file and the programs that

Thanks for your input, congo. Now I'm not so sure anymore that it is the sound card because of what you wrote above and because it went to hell almost immediately after putting in the CD. I am now not sure what is my next step. Where would I look for what was on the CD-- in All Programs or somewhere else? Thanks.

Goto control panel, add-remove programs and look for something there that could be related to the monitor, either a program that says "LG something" or "monitor Flatron something" etc.  If you see it there and it is obviously the culprit (ie. "LG Flatron Improvement Hogwash" ) then just click on the remove button and you should be back to square one as long as the program didn't modify any stock Windows drivers or settings.


Another way to do it is to run that CD in your drive again and watch what it says it's trying to install, then cancel the install once you see what it is.

If it goes ahead and installs anyway, just let it, I don't think it will do any more harm, and try to determine what it might be called so you can search and remove/destroy it.

I was into Best Buy yesterday, taking back those useless video cards and buying FS10 when I went over to the service desk and asked a young man behind it about this monitor problem. I explained the whole, sordid story. He opined that I should key Ctrl-Alt-Del and when the box pops up, select the Processes tab to see which ones were running. I did that upon my return home and saw that I have 62 processes running, one of which is one called LMonitor. I can click the End Process button but if I do, I am told by the machine that I can't get it back. So I didn't click and still have the screeching sound instead of the soothing tone of a 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin (Griffin, maybe?) engine at full throttle in my P-51D Mustang. Would you click on LMonitor to End its Process?

62 processes? holy geez! You should have more like 35 or so running, I run like 27 or so when all my stuff is off (messenger, Xfire, Card reader, IE etc) sounds like a coincidence to me, meaning that something went wrong at the same time you installed the monitor.... look around your computer you'll figure out what it is. I've had this happen to me many times before, one thing goes wrong, but its something totally different, my last computer fried because of this, so be careful!

No, I wouldn't, I'd just uninstall it as I explained earlier, reboot and see if the prob is gone.

Typing here now, I look at task manager and see 16 processes, but I'm a smart arse..
