Annoying flickering

Postby Robban_Sweden » Thu Feb 09, 2006 2:40 pm

Is there anyway to get rid of annoying flickering?
I have the graphics card set to 2xQ AA and 16x AF and high quality images.
And it doesn't seem to be a mip-mapping quality problem because it doesn't matter if I put it down to non, the buildings and trees and so on still flickers.

I run on the cards original drivers because I have bad experiences with new drivers. All I've tried has never made any improvements, more like the other way around.

Any ideas? See computer specs below.

I sometimes wonder if we expect our graphics monitor pixel display to be as solid as a Television cathode-ray tube picture display.... :'(...!
Your computer hardware is about the best there is, and you will still notice flickering of the trees in the distance I think, due to the masses of pixels making up the tree objects constantly being refreshed as you change course slightly...!
I don't notice the same problem with solid buildings though... ;)...!
Displaying the picture in full-screen mode in high resolution instead of windowed mode eases the problem somewhat though...;D...!

I just accept the slight flickering on the monitor as not being quite the same as watching the television... ;D...!

Cheers...!

Paul...all of a flicker... ;D...!

In your case all i can sugest is to set the mip mapping quality slider level to no greater than 4

There is a fix for ATI video cards but not yours (Nvidia)unfortunately

FOR PEOPLE USING ATI VIDEO CARDS:

If you are using an ATI video card or an ATI based video card (Nvidia cards wont work with this fix).. download the DX Override fix from here:

http://www.humus.ca/Cool/DXOverride.zip

1.
Unzip the file to your hard drive. Copy/PASTE both files:

d3d9.dll
d3d9.ini

DIRECTLY into your FS9 installtion folder.

2.
Open the d3d9.ini file and make sure the following is edited as it is posted below:

------------------------------------------------

// Forces alpha to coverage instead of alpha test
ForceAlphaToCoverage = 1

// 0 = Don't force a backbuffer format. Any other value is interpreted as a D3DFORMAT value.
// A2R10G10B10 = 35
// A8R8G8B8 = 21
// X8R8G8B8 = 22
// A1R5G5B5 = 25
// X1R5G5B5 = 24
// R5G6B5 = 23
ForceBackBufferFormat = 0

// 0 = Don't force a DepthStencil format. Any other value is interpreted as a D3DFORMAT value.
// D24S8 = 75
// D24X8 = 77
// D16 = 80
ForceDepthStencilFormat = 0

// 0 = Don't force any FSAA mode, any other number indicates number of samples, for instance 2, 4 or 6.
ForceMSAAMode = 4

// 0 = Don't force resolution. If both are set, the indicated resolution will be enforced.
ForceWidth = 0
ForceHeight = 0

boot up the sim and enjoy the difference in clarity and lack of flickers!

Well, I increased the AA setting from 2xQ to 4x and that reduced the flickering a little bit so now it's not that annoying anymore, and the framerate wasn't effected conciderable by that either.

Now it's just the stuttering problem left...  ;)

Leave your CD Drivers installed, Install the newest drivers over em, and you'll be golden, Yea I know you'll still have a few problems flickering, but I got my card fixed (been 3-4 months since I flew because of it) and just now getting it done! Cheers, Gunny

EDIT: Btw, that card should do 4-8X AA no problem, I do 4X on mine without a single problem except low frames at major airports now and then and I have a 6200! and try to keep the AA and AT level it seems to help. hope this helps!

Will this help with the stuttering, you mean?

if you mean the tees shimmering I found setting 4x AF fixed it for me even though my mip map lvl is 8.

Yea it should help with stuttering, HOWEVER, if your card is half screwed up like mine is, you'll have a few glitches here and there, but nothing as to where you cant fly etc.... FS9 and the newest nvidia drivers dont get along, and nor do my stock drivers, but least I can fly and take screenshots etc. as for glitches, you'll prolly always have em! Sorry if I cant be of help, if you find out how to rid these weird glitches, let me know! Cheers, Gunny

Well, actually, the flickering got a little better when I reduced the AF from 8X to 4X. And then I reduced the global max texture size to high instead of massive, and that helped a bit too.
So I guess this is as good as it's gonna get, and as it is now, I can live with it.

When it comes to the stuttering, I can't install any new CD drivers because I use the latest ones.
It's too bad I have theese iregular stutters becasue I have framerates well high enough to give me a smooth ride, but even when the framerate is as high as 70 it stutters here and there.
And I use FS Autostart and when I do I have between 800 and 850 mb memory available, and even without using FS Autostart I have between 700 and 750 mb available so it can't be a memory or CPU problem.

I had a long conversation with a Microsoft engineer this afternoon on the subject of stutters and shimmers in FS9. I called her because I had some questions concerning changes I made to my system and the recent ATI graphics settings that deal with foliage shimmers.

I received clarification from her about stutters in the sim. There are 10 major causes:

That's quite a djungle...

Well, which of these options apply to my system then...

Problem 1 and 2 shouldn't be the problem.

When we are talking about physical memory, are we talking about RAM then? (I'm not that hot on computers in Swedish, and as you can understand I'm not any better when talking about it in English  :)
Or what exactly is my physical memory?

The pagefile, is that the value you can set by going into the system folder in the control panel and then eventually going to the virtual memory page?

Options 4d-4e shouldn't be the problem either because even when I had my sim completely original I had the same problem.

Option 5 won't apply for me I think because I have a PCI Express card. Am I right?

The BIOS settings I can't tell if they're wrong, the guy in the computer shop who selected the components for my computer set the bios for me when I had put the thing together. And he knew I wanted a better computer to be able to play Flight Simulator a little smoother than I could before.

Options 7-10 shouldn't be the problem either.

So I think I will start with changing the pagefile, but as I said before, I don't know how much physical memory I have.

Well, I found out that physical memory is the RAM so I changed the pagefile to 3x1024.

But I'm sorry to say that it didn't make any differense at all.

The strange thing is this: (Read my other topic of my strange discovery of stuttering here)

...assuming by "stuttering" you mean "jumping?", I always cure that by selecting Weather > User defined Weather > Customise Weather > Visibility > set to 10-20 miles Max...!

There is little point in getting the processor and graphics card to try and render complex objects/scenery hundreds of miles away, which would be out of eyesight... ;)... ;D...!

I have all my settings at "Max" except for visibility, which is often down to 5 miles...no stuttering or jumping because of very little load on the system... ;D...!

Paul...flying under real weather visibility  conditions...;)... 8)...!
