Subwoofer

Postby Archer <]- » Tue Dec 14, 2004 6:27 pm

My comp is on a desk surrounded on 3 sides and I'm looking at getting a 2.1 speaker system to 'upgrade' from my 2.0 3watt total stock speakers (pathetic i know lol :D)

But i was wonderin if the sub would have any impact bcuz it would b on the floor and i dont know if the sound would still come through well since it would b surrounded and on the floor???

obviously i dont kno lots about speakers so thx in advance :)

The subwoofer makes a huge difference, but only on 7.1 and 5.1 sound systems. For 2.1 sound system, i think it would make a small difference, but its better then nothing.

I don't know too much about 2.1 systems. I only have 7.1 and 5.1 systems in which the subwoofer impact is huge, but I've never owned a 2.1, so someone else may be able to help you more.

A sub woffer fills in the low frequencies that your main speakers can`t reproduce.

It doesn`t matter if you sys is good ol' mono (1.1? ;) ), 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, 7.1, 8.1 9.9 10.1 or whatever , the effect and benefit is exactly the same!

Low frequencies are "non directional"

Joe_D pretty much summed it up, but I might add:

Placing a subwoofer in a corner can vastly improve the sound quality - usually in the corner diagonally opposite your sitting position, but that's furniture and room-layout (resonance) dependent - if you do have a corner available, try placing it near some furniture (large wood stuff, like cabinets or shelving especially), as it helps distribute the bass frequencies a bit more evenly.

You don't want a sub-woofer on the shelf!  ;D
Like JoeD said it reall doesn't matter where it is placed, when you fire up the engines if your favorite aircraft you'll feel it ;)

If you look at my avatar, you may see the size of my desk. My subwoofer is on the floor in the corner.

Like Joe_D said.  Just place it on the floor, out of the way. If you have a hard time hearing it just turn up the volume.

I got my sub on the floor, to the right of my computer desk, exactly where the water bottle is in the pic.
It sounds fine there and is easily accessable.
