Got a couple parts, now what?

Postby imagine » Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:22 pm

Hi Everyone,
My father was recently going to throw out an old computer, due to issues with the power supply, but I stopped him first and asked him if I could grab a few parts. After he said yes I grabbed the following items:

An Intel Processor (not sure of the model, but on the front of the computer the sticker read Intel Core Quad, so I assume its a quad core processor)

A Nvidia Graphics Card (again not sure of the model, but I think it will suffice for FSX)

6 GB of RAM

So what I'm basically asking is what should I do next? I have a very old computer which I asked about on another topic, maybe I could install the parts on that and try to get good performance? Maybe I should save up money and buy the rest of components I need for a new computer? I could maybe even try to install these into my laptop? (not sure if that would even be possible without fireworks ;D) Anyway, if you guys need more details on the equipment, I would be happy to provide you with everything I know. I'd love to hear what you guys think I should do next with this recently acquired hardware, thanks!

The first thing to do is enter the ID/SN numbers from any parts into Google and find out more about them (especially the RAM, different machines need different speeds etc).
Then the question is do you have a motherboard compatible with this little parcel of liberated parts?

Thanks for the help. After looking at all the parts and trying to find the right numbers here's what I came up with.

Graphics Card: PCIe NVIDIA GT210 512MB Standard Bracket Graphics Card (Oribi)

Processor: INTEL 06 Q8300 INTEL CORE 2 QUAD SLGUR MALAY 2.50GHZ
(this is exactly how it appeared on the top of the processor, but I had to scrape some kind of grease off with a tissue to read it, and left some scuff marks, I hope I didn't damage it)

RAM: ELPIDA 2GB (I have 3 "chips" of it) 2Rx8, (I have trouble finding stuff on this because mainly I don't know what I am looking for, here is the number PC3-10600U-9-10-B0)

As far as Motherboards go, I have no idea if one is compatible or not, I still may have time to go grab the one from the old computer if that's what I need. Again, I thank you for your help on this, as you can probably tell, I am in way over my head.

Honestly, I would grab the the motherboard and hold on to it until all the links in the chain fit the cogs.

Changing motherboards, if you use Windows software could be problematic, so be aware.
