CPU Cooler Backplate Removal

I am replacing the CPU cooler on my Dell Studio 540, and to get the new aftermarket cooler(which uses pins instead of screws) I need to remove the OEM cooler backplate. The computer has multiple users, and I'll be in a bit of trouble if the mobo goes under.  :-/
So I need to know if this is a safe thing to do, or if it's too risky and I should return the aftermarket cooler and go get a replacement Dell cooler that will use the same backplate.
