PC Build from Scratch

Postby mykV » Mon Feb 14, 2011 2:42 pm

Hi people, I am thinking of building a new computer to up-grade my current system to something a lot better.
My current system is :-  Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13Ghz, 6Gb RAM DDR2, Nvidia 9500GT 1024Mb, Acer MRS600M mobo, 500w PSU, Windows7 64bit Home Premium.

What I was considering for my new system was :-
AMD Phenom11 x6 1055T 2.80Ghz,ASUS M4A78LT-M mobo,8Gb RAM 1600  DDR3, Gigabyte Geforce GTS450 1024Mb Gddr5, 600w PSU, Windows7 64bit Home Premium.

Could anybody please advise me as to wether I have made a good choice of components to be able to build a better computer for flightsimming, as my current set-up does tend to struggle at time with frames around 7 -  14fps around urban areas and some airports  and 12 - 22 over featureless areas and maybe hitting  high twenties to forties over water areas.  I am hoping that the suggested new components will let me turn up my sliders to the right for the first time and also reset my fps to more than 26 locked. Any advice given will be treated seriously and with gratitude. Many thanks in advance   Myk

You might find a 460 in your current rig will give you more punch than your proposed upgrade with a 450.

I'm not saying to just buy a 460, but I am saying that graphics horsepower is important, and the 450 simply lacks that by comparison to better cards.

Many thanks for your reply Congo, Could I please ask is this a good choice of CPU or not. I recently was told of an article in PCFormat that slated the Phenom 11 X6 1100T Be as not being very good for gaming. And as I am basing my rebuild on a system that I have seen from a good company but a little over-priced for me. I thought I would do a build based on those lines and of course being able to afford the said rebuild cheaper by around

go with the pc waspiflab pointed out.

only change the mobo to Gigabyte P67A-UD3 as the PH67 uses the H series chipset and I'm not sure if that supports overclocking. P series does. P67A-UD3R / UD3P has better power regulation that's even better for overclocking... but more expensive of course. If not overclocking the CPU then get the Core i5 2500 instead of the Core i5 2500K, and any of those mobos will do.

if overclocking:

Core i5 2500K
Gigabyte P67A-UD3R
GTX 460 768mb (1024mb if you're willing to spend a little more, worth it IMHO)
4gb DDR3-1600 CL 6, 7 or 8.

If not overclocking
Core i5 2500
Gigabyte P67A-UD3
GTX 460 768mb (1024mb if you're willing to spend a little more, worth it IMHO)
4gb DDR3-1333 CL 6, 7 or 8.

Not sure about case or power supply.... rest is good. definitely get that over the AMD x6 rig in the OP. Also, Intel motherboards are bugged at the moment... the SATA 3gb/s ports might stop working after several years of use.

information here: http://event.asus.com/2011/SandyBridge/notice/ it applies to gigabyte P67 / H67 motherboards too except the warranty and support parts.... might have to wait until april till its fixed.

Thanks NNNG ;)

Like NNNG says but if your not into overclocking don't bother with it it can be a pain in the ass and you'll have more than enough power there.

Lets us know how you get on ;)

I also see your in South Wales MYKV , there is a Novatech in Cardiff http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/hdou ... ml#cardiff so you could easily go get it if not they do deliver nexy day so long as your order is in before 12pm which is very good. They have loads order pc's instore so you just sit at a stool and take your time, I've been in there 1.5 hours before lol

Many many thanks for your replies chaps, I will endeavour to follow your guidelines for my new build, but I might have to compromise on a couple of items due to cost involved. I was hoping to get away with under

Dont buy intel H67 mainboard at present. There is bug that can cause SATA disks to loose data.

i5 2500K is great and overwhelming the phenom but you need to wait for intel to release new bug-free mainboards. wait for 1-2 months as me :-)
