GTX260 dead with FS9

Postby wody » Tue Jan 05, 2010 3:14 pm

Hello,

since July I have a new system buildt myself. It was working until yesterday with no problem at all.
My rig:
E8500, 4GB, ASUS P5Q, GTX260, WD Raptor 300GB (FS9 and FSX), WD 640GB (OS and other apps), 750W PS, Rebel9 Value Ed case, XP 64bit.

I am running primarily FS9.1, CONDOR and other small apps on this machine (Corel 12).

What happened:

Yesterday I was flying (FS9) and suddenly the screen went black on both attached screens (ASUS 22"Wide and 20"). My nose got some "electric" smell, the system did not react to any keyboard input, so I switched off.

After opening the case I did not find anything wrong, no dust, cleaned it 1 month ago, no high temp. So I powered up again and checked for smell, all fans turning, got all temps (CPU 41 degC, MB 36 degC) and I could work on the system. No problem with any app.

After 1 hour I started FS9 and some seconds after the final screen appeared, the crash came again and my display showed "No DVI" message. Smell again, switched off quickly.

The same situation on both DVI heads.
The same with Condor (Soaring Sim)

It looks like 3D part is not working, but normal 2D apps are ok.

Is there a way to test the GTX260 or should I return this card (1/2 year used) and exchange it?

Waiting for your suggestions - Thanks!!!

Take your GTX260 and try running it on other computers you have, if you have any. Then try running 3D applications with it. You could have a faulty card.

Unfortunately no PC with PCI. All others are Thinkpad.
I will go to a neihbour and try. He has no FS, so which would be a 3D app for testing?

By the way I am writing on the faulty machine. Funny, 2D works....

Thanks anyhow

Well... you could always try running bench tests, here is a link to a site with a ton.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/

Explore the downloads. You might also need to downgrade drivers instead. Sometimes the newest driver doesn't work well with 3D apps, but works fine with 2D.

Also, 2D works because it is not making the GPU do serious work. Once you do 3D it will get faulty unless you figure the problem of course.
