A huge DUH to me.....

I used Nick's guide to set up FSX when I installed it on my system. However, I had forgotten to use his WinXP guide!! I can't believe I am so stupid! I had just switched my Q6600 system from Vista back to XP64 and ran the set-up on it. I was thinking the entire time that I had set it up on the i7. aaaahhhh!

I went to the guide this morning to follow the steps to run O&O and realized none of this has been done. I just went through everything and I'm now at the OO part. I had a whopping 57% defrag on this new drive! It's running the space defrag now.

After I complete all of this, I'll test FSX again.

uh huh

I knew there was something out of whack with this..

I was not saying anything cuz people need to stop and think about what they are doing.. go through everything step by step and remember.. slamming a system with all sorts of addon airports and crap can also be a factor. The base install should be calibrated with texture and landclass replacements (GEX+UTX or what ever other addons like that) using the default aircraft and airports first... once you confirm everything then move to check addon airports and AC and you will need to defrag again after they are all installed

the idea is to verify and tune the base then see where you sit with the heavy hitting addons like payware planes and airports. If you were able to get set up with the default + base addons and its giving you grief with extras then the problem is the extras... if you are getting grief before then you either missed something, there is some type of install corruption or the driver are not working well for the system

another thing too.. moving to a new system means A CLEAN INSTALL ... ALL OF IT

every joker who ever tried to migrate a install to save time be it OS or FSX ends up with exactly what they deserve..   LOL

My FSX tune list is there for a reason.. reducing boats and ships against my suggestions is you taking on a change my tuning list did not say to do.. there is a reason why I said to set ships and boats to the specified levels for the hardware installed.

Things like that is where people get snookered.

They think LESS is better...       Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz   wrong answer, thank you for playing..   next contestant johnny

I second that about the less is better thinking as I have spent the better part of my day playing around with the Affinity Mask. I bounced back and forth with settings and thought I had a as good as is will get setting combination then....

I stopped following the AM tweek thread but then read about using 14. So I switched to 14 and now I can run MAX SCENERY and MAX Autogen  even with 8 cars using UTX with great results. Today I also edited the exit data in all my Ultimate Traffic AI so the jetways wont be activated. Also loaded up the new released drivers 182.06 and am having good luck with those. I got a message from Steve and he is still having the problem even after defragging. Steve, you said that you had the stutter problem on your old system as well so maybe it is one of those add ons. I would do as Nick has suggested and remove all your addons and see how she flys. When I set mine up I added them 1 at a time testing between each install to see the result. Doing it that way you will know exactly which one is the bad egg. I would bet that it is a addon issue.

Steve, try setting your AA in nhancer to 4xS from 8xS. That may get rid of the stutters. Let me know how that looks.

Actually dont try the 4xS. When I did it hosed my nhancer and had bad grapic problems in fsx. Im reinstalling it now. Sorry.

The xS setting is to get rid of shimmer and it does come with some cost in weather. Setting to Multisample 4x is fine.. even 8x but shimmers are what the xS setting is designed to get rid of

Thanks to Jim we seem to be perfect now!

Bumping up the projector to a refresh rate of 85hz and locking the framerates at 28 has made all the difference. The entire image just became "smoother" immediately when the refresh was changed.

I did up the road traffic, ships and leisure boats. I thought that your guide said to lower these if you don't want them. It doesn't seem to hurt anything having them up to about 15% so I am leaving it set that way.

My list said slower system should lower them... your system should have no issues set to 25

Got it. Jim just sent me a note that removing the AF tweak upped his frames by 2 or so. I'm taking that out as well.

My TBM=90 and my Bufferpool=100000000. With the projector at 85hz, everything looks great!

Sitting on the ground in a Level D 767 at ORD, frames locked at 28. Takeoff run drops to 26-27, back to 28, back to 26 and so on but it is smooth as glass. Departing and tuning after takeoff is smooth now too.

I've been having problems with bufferpools but I've only tried 70000000 and 80000000 none of which worked. but 100000000 made things unbelievably better... smooth as can be with autogen maxed out and some heavy weather, and I'm not even defragged yet (just did a full reinstall)

Just the card itself

You must make sure you do not overheat the core when doing so.

Thanks Nick, reason I asked is I did try a very modest increase using Riva Tuner from 650 MHz->675 MHz for the GPU and from 1242 MHz->1300 MHz for the memory but that resulted in my screen freezing after a couple of minutes and then it unfreezed again and all was back to normal with a message saying that the driver for my VC had stopped responding and been reset.

I'm using a XFX GTX285 card standard version. As for the temps I don't think that should be a problem since I'm using an AC aquagraFX waterblock.

Will see if I do some more experimenting with this, I doubt it will make much difference for FSX though if the VC runs @ 650 or 700 MHz or am I wrong?
