Velociraptors...300 or 150 gig..same ?

Postby Kanahele » Thu Jan 22, 2009 4:18 pm

I am now ready to upgrade and add a second hard drive...

Velociraptor is what I want...according to Nick...its the way to go...

There are 2 Velociraptors available 300 and 150 GIG, and the 150 is a better price for me... also 150 gig for FSX only is plenty for me.

Is PERFORMANCE any different between the 2 ?

Would the 150 perform the same as the 300 with just less space ?

Thanks much for your expertise !

There are different models of the 300 and 150 too. I'm confused about which one to get if I want to mount it internally--just like another drive.

For example, they show: WD3000HLFS and WD3000GLFS. What's the difference?

Nick, do you have a link to the VR we would need?

150 or 300.. same perf, no difference

but do be aware, once any drive reaches 35-30% freespace the perf begins to drop and falls rapidly once the drive is 70% full or greater

The GLFS is incompatible with some enclosures or hotswap bays because the connectors are non-standard. The HLFS fixes that.

the GLFS is "SATA cable connect"
the HLFS is "backplane-ready"

The difference is the shape and the placement of the SATA and power connector

Unless you have a special hotswap tower setup, either one will work fine

I have the 300 and it fit in just fine...it's a lap top HDD in a std heat sink. It's pretty quiet, nothing abnormal...I know some people were whining on Newegg about, but that's crap....it's a great drive.
