Out of Available Memory

Postby enm » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:34 pm

Hello Everyone

Here is my Comp. Specs.
MSI K9A2 CF motherboard
AMD 5600+ 2.8
3G pc6400
XFX Ultra 8800 Video Card
Windows XP 32bit

FSX stops and displays a message saying out of available memory. I have read Nicks threads and have set my computer to "Systme Manage" my virtual memory. I even TRIED to find the file to allow XP to see 3G's but was unable to find the file where the thread stated. So my system is only seeing 2G. When FSX Froze and displayed the message, windows task manager showed 2.25 G....I know that is way to high. I did have other applications running in the back ground that are related to FSX, such as, ASX...Jeppesen...and a PDF file.

Prior to getting the message I noticed that the ground was showing Black squares (Blocks) that eventually took over the entire ground, but by changing views, the ground would become normal....and then slowly the blocks would appear.

Should I allow windows to manage my system memory? Or should I put in a huge number? Or what can be the problem?

BTW...I just purchased the Ultra 8800 video card last week...and to be completely honest...it did not do much except make the graphics perform a bit smoother...especially when your flying through thick clouds. Other than that....this comfirms that FSX is CPU hungry and not GPU

Thanks
Eric

I see you have vista, simple solution, run FSX as admin.
AMD ATHLON 64 x2 2.5ghz
3gbs ram
8800gt 512mb
3gbs ram
vista 32bit
Stopped after that. ;) Yes FSX is very CPU hungry but FSX is also buggy with Vista if it is not run as admin ;)

1.  System Managed is fine.. windows will expand it automatically

2. This must be done and the reason for your problem:

WINDOWS XP x32 WITH MORE THAN 2 GIGS OF SYSTEM MEMORY

If you have FSX SP2, the exe file is already 2G+ aware

If you have XP or VISTA x32 and more than 2GB you need to MARK the OS for that use or it will ignore the sticks and never use them

disable hidden files and folders, then on the root C:\ you will find a file named: boot.ini

Open it in notepad and add the follwoing to the end of the OS boot line:

/3GB/Userva=2560

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professsional" /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2560 <---- add it here

save and close the file

reboot

to set that back to default, simply remove the edit

I dug into it a little deeper now.....I did not have the "Hide protective operating system files" box checked....this is why I could not find the boot.ini file.

I added the text to the end of the OS boot line, then rebooted the computer. Task manager now recognizes at least 2.6G of Ram. And it seems that the gound Displays the mesh and Textures more quickly too....thats a plus. I guess Im going to mess around with FSX and hopefully I wont get that error message anymore.
Thanks Nick.

And Wii....I have XP not Vista.....but I'am going to upgrade to vista within the next month and CANT WAIT to deal with the problems its going to present since I have never used it. lol
