To CrossFireX or Not

Postby Bubblehead » Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:46 pm

My mobo supports crossfire video cards. I have at present a single Diamond ATI Radeon HD3870 GDDR4 card. I wish to install a duplicate card in crossfire configuration. Disregarding the cost, would a single HD4850 be better than two HD3870s?

No way, two 3870's would rip apart a 4850.

I'm getting conflicting signals. I read from one reply that a single more powerful card such as the 4870 will run circles around two 3870s in a crossfire config.

well with two cards it's like having two ram sticks, they can go faster and the 3870 it a good card, and you have double the AA and AF and it makes your Computer look cool :D

I have 2 3870s and have read a lot of coments and feedback on them in Crossfire.

I have run a lot of the tests they talk about and the 4870 has yet to beat my 3870s. (checked against computers with like CPUs)

But if you go to 2 4850s that is a different story and a pair of 4870s are really nice.

If I could get my computer close enouth to the router to run a cable to it I would dump my wifi card and install a 3rd 3870.

I had a live chat with the Diamond ATI techs and they informed me that two HD3870s will performa better than one HD4870. So I bought a second card however, I will have problem installing it if I follow instructions on the User Guide of the motherboard. They described the cards mounted in a master/slave configuration and using one blue and the other the black PCIEx16 slots. They must be showing a different type crossfire video card. Tell me if I'm correct. I think that the two Diamond cards will each be installed in the two blue slots and use the jumper provided to connect each other in crossfire. That's the only way the cards will fit in the limited space

That will be the same either way I believe, since if one is X8 and the other is X16, it'll still run at X8 for both cards.
