Slow Wifi?

Postby expat » Fri Aug 15, 2008 6:25 am

Anyone got any ideas for the following?

I am using my Laptop via wifi. If I have a line of sight connection (even through walls) I have a fast internet connection. If I put a wall and corner in the way, the internet drops to a crawl even though my laptop still tells me I have a 54mps connection. I have used the laptop at friends wifi connections and in hotels without a problem. The only thing that I can think of is that some of my walls are concrete with steel reinforcement........help.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Interesting!! Although i cant say why, ive had similar with my laptop.

Before we moved recently, i discoverd that my next door but one neighbour, who was two driveways, and one complete house away, had unsecure internet - so i cheekily, and probably illegaly, did some sneaky tests with my own internet v his and discoverd that with my laptop sat next to my own router, using my internet, the signal varied between 100% as expected, and 70-80% if i moved around the house. Yet using my next door but one neighbours internet, i got a signal of always over 65%, and in one certain room, sometimes over 70%, and discoverd i could download at over 70-100kpbs!! Not bad considering the distance i thought!

Talking to him revealed it was indeed NTL/Virgin he was using, as i was.

Now ive got BT broadband, and although the hub is connected direct to m main PC, ive faffed with the wireless on my laptop and with the hub downstairs i can barely get 70% signal upstairs, although line of sight gives me 100% with the same speed i get on my main PC....although even though it says its connected at some silly fast speed, thats only the link between the hub and the laptop, sadly :(

BT sucks, so far!

I have an answer for this one, yay.
I had the same problem with our laptops. We had the router a wall or two away and would have 1 or 2 bars even though it was a 802.11n router. We contacted our house builder and they said (because it was a higher end home) they heavily insulated it. To the point you can't even hear the rain. Supposedly this insulation "soaks" up the connection. I doubt you would have steal walls. Maybe concrete if you live in a high hurricane risk area.

Hope I helped :)

Well, I may have found out what the problem was. It would appear that for some reason (what ever that could be
