New computer time?

Postby gtirob01 » Thu Jul 10, 2008 9:01 pm

Ive been considering upgrading from what I have now... which is pretty much a dinosaur.

Came across a COMPAQ SR5254X INTEL DUAL CORE 1.6GHZ 1GB RAM 250HDD, and as I am on a limited budget (darn gas and all) I may go with this.

It only has integrated graphics, but has I believe 2 PCI-E slots. I can get an Invidia GeFORCE 7300GS with 256mb for next to nothing.

Would the combination of that computer and graphics card work good? I mainly just want to be able to have around 20fps, and most importantly.... have water texture and reflections! Just looking for opinions. THanks

Oh, will likely expand the memory to 2gb right away too.

My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.

To put it bluntly that rig would probably work moderately well for FS9. FSX would be a slideshow unless you really pulled back a bunch of the sliders. My brothers comp has a 2 ghz single core processor, 2 gigs pc 3200 ram, 1-256 mb nvidia 7900 gs graphics card, all on a basic compaq mobo and if he turns up traffic, weather or any other slider past midway FSX starts stuttering horribly, 2-3 FPS in dense scenery areas and if you fly any faster than 175 knots you will get to enjoy some of the most spectacular blurries you can imagine. Look on tiger direct or newegg and you can find quad core and dual core barebones systems that will give you a much better foundation for a new system without breaking the bank.

Im talking a very limited budget. Like in the 3-400 dollar range. I may just be looking for a decent base, and go from there. The quad core systems are definitely out of my current price range.

I found a new 2.8 ghz dual core, with 3 gig ddr2, 500 gig hd for about $360. I could always build up over time, but just need a decent place to start like I said before.

Save your money and get a good computer or you will be very disappointed. Or if your computer is on it's last leg get another old one and get the new one after you have saved up a bit. $400 won't get you much....
