Important work emergency problem

Postby Mike.. » Fri May 30, 2008 9:21 am

Hi guys. Long story short. My computer at work crashed. An old Dell GX something or another. The power supply I believe. Anyway, it took corporate a week to send me a new PC. It is up and running now.

The Problem.

The HD on my old work computer has an important document I need that has thousands of dollars worth of information I use to track my returns. As the HD still works from the old PC i put it in an enclosure and hooked it up to the new one. It locks it up. I know why. The new PC has XP installed. The old HD has Win2000 or 98 on it. I know by hooking them up it is creating a conflict of interest. As such, XP recognizes it as a mass storage device however it is not putting an active icon in "my computer" HD section for me to access it. Is there a program out there that will let me access my old HD to get my file?

Maybe some sort of command line in RUN that would let me switch over to the old HD with its OS long enough to get what I need then run the command line to swich back over to my active OS?

As stated prior. XP knows its there, but won't let me get in it.

Frustrated.....

For starters, how are the jumpers on the drives set? The newer one in this case should likely be set to "master", the older one with the stuff you need to retrieve would then be set to "slave". (I think)

Also, what sort of "enclosure"? Is the old drive connected to the pc from an external box, via a usb cable or something?

If so, try removing it from that, and connecting it directly to
