laptop keyboard numlock

Postby Wingo » Mon Mar 31, 2008 12:37 am

I just got my laptop back from repair this morning. Since it came back my keyboard has been behaving a bit funny. I have a large enough laptop to have a separate numpad on the keyboard. Now usually I would leave numlock on and use the keypad to type numbers, but with numlock on any letter on the left half of the keyboard types a number. E.g. i types 5. Now I know this function is used on smaller keyboards that don't have enough room for a separate numpad. Now for my question, how do I get this to work the way it used to? As in when numlock was on i still typed i.

Send it back to repair and tell them they haven't fixed it and you expect the num lock to to be fixed free of charge as they failed to provide the service last time.

looks like they got the keyboard drivers mixed up. did your laptop come with a restore disc? see if the right drivers are there. or take it back and have the people that worked on it, work on it again.

I've already given different drivers a go, I've even installed the generic drivers. It seems to be the way in which Windows is communicating with the keyboard and interpreting the ASCII. I think I need to change the keyboard layout setting, but I can't remember how to do it on Vista.

EDIT: Scratch that. I just tried another driver, the Standard PS/2 103/103 Key driver and it works without a prob

ok still having problems, but I've found out some new info.

If I start the laptop with numlock on, it will work properly. Letters write letters, and the numpad writes numbers. If I turn numlock off then on again it goes back to the whacky way where numpad writes numbers, but so do the letters.

Go into your BIOS on start-up and tell it to switch on Num Lock whilst booting and you'll not have to worry about it again.
Sounds like it could be something screwy with the BIOS. Probably a good idea to check its settings carefully ;)

Sadly my BIOS is extremely limited. At most it allows me to change the system time and the boot order. If it comes down to it I can always download the latest version from the hp website and flash it.
