Dual-Link DVI?

Postby Akula. » Mon Jun 25, 2007 3:45 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my monitor around christmas time (big financial boost around that time. gotta love being a kid  ;)) to a Dell 3007WFP. This monitor needs a dual-link DVI graphics card to run it, which my current

ur gonna get that monster too?  thats cool... 8-)

anyway, if ur not gonna spend much cash on the graphics cards, dont bother getting the monitor.

personally, i think u would need two cards in SLI or Crossfire (preferably in SLI).  because, for any decent game on that kind of screen, the graphics card will definately struggle, so two graphics cards need to share the load.

there is a specific point where SLI will help every game, and that's when you reach very high resolutions, like 2560x1600.

so, maybe two 8800 GTS's in SLI, possible two 8600's but im not too sure.

if you cant fork out the cash to get any decent graphics card, then dont bother with the monitor...

I agree the monitor would be nice for movies etc etc but for a monitor of that size and res you will need a decent gfx card to run any game well. Now you prolly don't need an SLI 8800 to run BF2 at 20 FPS but you will need something like a 7 series card at least. As St1ker said, monitor looks cool till you try and play a game and then your cry.

also, like u say, movies will be about the only thing to do if the graphics card aint good, but even then, movies still dont use the full resolution of the monitor...

only the actual computer and it's games and applications will make good use of the shear amount of pixels, but movies will blur their own pixels over multiple monitor ones.

so u really do need a decent card AT LEAST.

btw, u definately need SLI or Crossfire if you wanna play FSX on it... :o

Well my current monitor (a 21" CRT one) decided to blow up last night, and it wont even turn on today. No idea why, but I did get it for five quid off ebay. So I'm thinking that I might just go and get one of the 24" or 27" dell models. 1920x1200 resolution is good enough for me, it wont put as much strain on the graphics card, and to be honest the 27" model looks waaay better than the 30" in my opinion. Right... where can I get a 27" dell monitor for a few hundred quid *clicks open ebay.co.uk*

Thanks for the help :)
