Well I know the new K10 arch will be backwards compatible in socket AM2 to an extent. AMD is staying hush hush right now on a lot of the specifics but Phenom the first core at least will work. Phenom is a dualcore though. As planned AM3 CPUS will be compatible with AM2+ but will lack ddr3 support. I cant tell you if AM3 cpus can go all the way back to AM2 or even if the quad-cores can. Since what is planned is backward compatibility I don't see why not.  I think it will be a great move at least on the marketing side if people can keep their MB...AMD is in the dumps right now wich is unfortunate(yes it is even for the Intel bandwagon). Hopefully amd will pull something out of their arse and im not as hopeful about that as I was lol 8-)

Thats why I stuck with 939 and bought an Opty 180, got her to 2.75 Ghz on stock volts right now, the Optys 165 are hittin 3 Ghz I hope mine is the same...so far so good. It is my first dualcore and it's kinda cool I can run Prime95 on one core and play a game on the other, its outstanding. Just wish the games I played made more use of it.

It has not been that long since I upgraded to AM2 and cannot afford another complete upgrade. Like a lot of others here I can probably afford the new CPU upgrade if it is AM2 compatable. Later when the reports are in I might be able to upgrade the rest of the system if it seems worthwhile.

I really hope AMD has people like me in mind.

You will be fine for a AM2+ processor upgrade. They will run but you will not have full 100% processor support under AM2. Certain functions will require AM2+ but the main functions will work fine and you will still have the new core design advantages.

AMD upgrades should hold until the end of the year or next summer. Once they get the new chipset out and optimized then the 45nm processors will follow. The combination of the 2 along with R700 support due out next spring is what will put AMD back in the game. The redsigned R600 due out in August/September along with the newer R670 will be the next boost and will also make the new chipset/processor shine.

AMD had a 1 year setback in buying ATi but it was expected is only temp as they reconfigure so both work together. As of the end of the year they will be making a major comeback.
