New Computer - Need Help With Parts Selection

Postby Ashton Lawson » Mon May 21, 2007 10:10 am

Hey guys,

Okay, so here's the deal.  My tennis coach is thinking of buying a new computer, and I advised him to have someone build it, rather than buy one from (for example) Dell, beacuse it would be cheaper.  After a bit more talking, we reached a conclusion that I will be gathering the parts, and building this computer for him.  Now, he trusts me to make a good computer for him, and when I say he trusts me, I mean he trusts you guys on the forum, like Cameron and Nick and the rest of you lot. ;)

So, let's see what you guys can come up with, here are the parameters:

Budget:  Roughly $1000 :P

Components Included in Budget:
Processor                   - Preferably an Intel
Motherboard               - Preferably an eVGA or ASUS that's SLI ready
Graphics Card             - Preferably an eVGA DX10 card
RAM                           - Preferably Kingston or Corsair 1-2 GB
Power Supply Unit       - Preferably PC Power & Cooling
Hard Disk Drive           - Anything that's good and cheap
Monitor                       - Preferably widescreen, fairly high-res

Now, obviously mouse, keyboard, DVD drive and case are needed, so if you guys could leave enough money in the budget to buy these parts (in Thailand, they'll be dead cheap ;D)...

So, hope you guys can come up with something good. :)

Thanks,

Str!ker

P.S.  If there is anything else that needs to be specified, just ask. ;)

Are you going to offer your coach a 1 year warranty on parts and labor after you've built the computer and delivered it to him/her?

Dunno, I might.  I am quite good... ;)

Oh, by the way, you can also take into account the predicted price drop for the whole of the Intel Core 2 processors and stuff. :D

Well I can't help much with what part to get because I am still in the dark because I have been gone. Get parts that are good and reputable that way he has the warrantee so if things do break he can fix it. Explain to him that a custom made compujter does have its downfall for home users such as if something does break you can't send the whole thing into dell and get it fixed at a nominal price, it will be a 50 dollar an hour rate unless he can do it himself.

There are no Core 2 duos above 3ghz. Highest is 2.93ghz.
As far as I know, 690i is not PCI-E 2.0
8950gx2 doesn't exist and I doubt it would work on the PC power and cooling. You said you wanted to copy a 800$ dell? Well a Core 2 duo QX6800 costs more.  ::)

If you want that rig in your signature, I think you'll have to wait quiet a few months.

If it were me I wouldn't waste my money on them overpriced components. I would just buy a E6700, P35 motherboard, DDR2 memory and a single HD 2900XT. That would be half, or maybe even a third the cost of your system above and would still max out any games at 1600x1200.

Anyway, I would just get:
Gigabyte P35 motherboard
Intel Core 2 duo E6600
Any quality 2x1gb DDR2-800
320gb harddrive
7950GT or 512mb HD 2600XT (If you can wait)

Sorry I need to go so I cant go into detail. :)
