Thanks for the hint... will apply it in january after system rebuild (not on an FS machine, but on another one)

And another large performace hit comes from the fact that new AMD Duals have half the cache of old ones (im lucky, mine has 512k for each core)

Scylla, see if you can locate a correct and updated bios first. Also read the release notes and history notes on the fixes incorporated in the bios updates as well to verify the issues which are addressed.

The 4400+ and 4800+ had 1mb per core on socket 939, and 512mb per core were on the other dual cores. I didn't realise they were making dual cores with 256mb l2 cache per core?

[quote]Thanks Nick - your assumptions are correct - everything OK until hotfix - I will proceed with caution (and perhaps enlist the help of someone who knows how to flash a BIOS without too much risk (not me).

What about on Vista?  IS there a fix to get it to use both processors?

Vista does this natively, thats one of the selling points of the OS.

You're right.  After checking, it already does it and after tweaks last night, it's really performing well now.
Thanks

I miss my old 486 DX4-100 rig. It was so much more simple...
emachines T6212; AMD Athlon64 3800+ (2.40 GHz; Venice core); Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply; 2048Mb PC3200 DDR400; Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide-screen LCD monitor; eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO X16 PCIe video card; Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight controller;<

OK.   So I have Windows Vista and both were checked off, but I still need SP1 for better performance?  Where is that update?
