Processor Speed

Postby yaarpanjabi » Sun Feb 25, 2007 4:56 am

Hi guys. My computer's specs are:

Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
1.25GB RAM
40GB HDD
nVidia GeForce FX5200 (AGP)

Basically I want to upgrade my PC to get rid of the low frames that I always get. I want to be able to use 4X AA and get some crisp Scenery while having good FPS.

Is my processor fast enough if I upgrade to a nVidia GeForce 7600GS 256MB (500MHz Core clock, 1000MHz Memory Clock)

Would that be enough for me to put up my graphics sliders to MAX?

Cheers.

I think it would, you're save on RAM and as far as I know the 7600GS doesn't use shared mem so I think you're save, go for it. :)

I'm worried about the processor's speed though. I am by no means an expert when it comes to computers, which is why I need help from this forum. I hope I can SURELY get the right answer before I go buy a new graphics card!

Are you wishing to use FSX or is it just for FS2004?
If it's for FS2004 then your processor is more than adequate and a 7600GS will see a big improvement but if you shop around a 7900GS would be so much better.
7600GS = $100  or

I think a 7800GS 256mb is the best you can do on AGP unless you go with the ATi x1950 Pro 512mb

Either way, the 2.4gig processor will be bottlenecked a bit, but much less with the 7800GS. The x1950 pro would be held back on a slow system. The main thing is the power supply. You will need to make sure it will handle around 20A with the 7800GS or a 7600GT and the system on the 12v rail. That would typically be around a 420-480watt unit (just a guess)

Do not go with the 7600GS .. you want the GT version of you decide to stay with the 7600 series. You will not be bottlenecked at all with the 7600GT

If you expect visuals and frames in FSX, forget it. FSX would require a massive upgrade but it will run on your system, just not very impressive. FS9 will run fine, especally with a 7800GS

The problem is that I need an AGP card, so the 7900 series is out of the question. Same with the 7800 Series.

You lie. The 7800GS comes in an AGP flavor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143046

If you can find one of the Gainward BIOS ones, Sell a kidney, and buy it.

Your major problem is that processer. A clock to 3.2Ghz would be wonders. And I wouldn't suggest getting that 7800GS if you aren't going to clock. If you choose against it, then a X850Pro or XT would be a better choice.

Cheers

I've read where the 7600GT will perform  better than the 7800GS in a range of apps.

Also, if you are lucky and have a mainboard with an 865 chipset and overclocking support with ram divider settings, you'll most likely squeeze close to 3ghz from the cpu.

OK guys, I've decided to get the 7600GT. One other question I have is with the 7600GS, is the 512MB version going to be any faster than the 256 version when it comes to FS?

Nope. I will take Pipelines and shaders over a RAM eater anyday.

OK, Back to the beginning. I've been doing more research and I'm now looking at the ATI X1650XT IceQ Turbo 256 MB.

The core clock is 630MHz and Memory clock is 1430MHz.

Is that a better card in terms of real world performance than the 7600GT?

Cheers.

You are not at the beginning, if you buy that it will be the end.

Absolutely not. The ATi x800-850xt PE is faster than a x1600xt, I dont care what its clocked to. Its not about clocks, its about the memory bus, pipelines, MT/s and the raw bandwidth in GB that counts. The 7600GT is close to the x1600XT but the 7600GT has 3 times the fill rate in MT/s.

The only ATi card worth getting past the x850xt series (agp or pcie) is the x1900pro-xtx, nothing else.

The 7800GS has 256bit memory and 44GB/s bandwidth so it will kick a 7600GT around @ 128bit and 22GB/s bandwidth as well.

Go with the 7600GT or the 7800GS. The 7800GS will mean you wont have much need for over-clocking where with the 7600GT you will probably want to clock it up.

OK, well if thats the case, I'm going for the XFX 7600GT XXX (580 Core, 1.5 GHz Memory).

For the amount of money I want to spend, thats pretty much what I want, but if anyone knows a (Australian) retailer who has got a better card than that, please let me know as I want to make the purchase asap.

Cheers.
