Gameport-- on  board or soundcard?

Postby chuckcrc » Tue Oct 10, 2006 4:45 am

Hi
I have been meaning to ask this question for some time.

Is there any performance issues/ differences between using a joystick plugged into a gameport on a soundcard in a pci slot or using a gameport that is plugged into a riser on the Motherboard.?

How does the cpu poll these devices and what effect do they have on the cpu/frame rate of your computer.

I remember doing some comparsions on this when I first swapped over to XP from win98 as I had trouble with getting my gameport MS FFB1 sidewider working and it "appeared" that the m/b gameport riser gave a lower frame rate but it may have been caused by something else -- not sure--  ???

Anyone have any ideas ?  :)

thanks

I dont think it will effect frame rates, just like sound cards, Sure, if you get a PCI Sound card you might gain 5FPS, but loose 70 bucks or so.... I am pretty sure this goes along the same lines! If your motherboard has it, use it, if not get a sound card that has one and use it! if it does cause a loss of frame rates, its not very much!

If your contemplating buying a $70 soundcard so you can use a gameport joystick you must be really in love with your stick, cus you can buy a Saitek X45 for about $40 bucks.

As for the preformance, it really dosn't matter, they both preform the same.

Thanks for the reply chaps . :)

The reason I 'm still using my gameport MSForce feedback 1 Sidewinder is that I have a $250aud set of Hoffman rudder pedals that will only work in-line with this joystick. In fact to maximise my use of those expensive pedals I bought a spare MS FFB1 stick that was on sale as old stock for $90 aud.

cheers
