I think Steven is right Cam, i really admire your incredible knowledge about computers and i know what the feling is, if you know alot about something its hard to reaalise taht other dont, like, me, not to be arrogant, but i know incredibly much about airplanes and its  ahard to realise taht other dont, but it doesn't mean i have less respect for what you know.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but it does get a little tireing when there are two or three threads in a row about "What should I look for in a new system."

I am also on kind of a 24 hour long rant at the world for various things. So sorry for calling you a "n00b" flyboy, don't take it seriously.

Cheers

ahh now you see haveing 3 threads about getting a new computer is a good thing, its what this forum is for.  All 3 of them are getting diffrent computers, have diffrent needs (other than FS) and require slightly, yet important, diffrent things. Its better to have them post before and get great ideas and build a great computer then to have them buy a crappy computer for too much money and have us laugh and point at them  ;D

P.S. Its spelled Stephen  ;) common mistake its ok  ;D

If you're on a budget, I'd aim for this:
Intel 965p or 965g
Core 2 duo E6300
2x512mb dual channel DDR2
Nvidia 7900GS
HIPER psu

It may not be the best but it's cheap.

Processer isn't worth it. Spending the extra $120 on the processer to buy the E6600, esp on a gaming rig, is worth every penny. The 4MB of L2 cache are just so perfect for gaming its not even funny.

From what I've heard it makes practically no difference. About 5-10% FPS increase in performance at most. In general computing its almost unnoticeable. The only time you can really see the difference is with encoding.
