In two months the computer world has advanced so much that you are not going buy this anymore ;)

What i'm trying to say is that you should not have decided what kind of rig you are going to buy in two months, as you might know, AMD has recently released a new motherboard technology called AM2. If AM2 gets on the market, The AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 CPU, running on a socket 939 motherboard, will lower in price. If i haven't been clear enough, contact Cameron(aka Ctjoyce here on SimV), he'll tell you all about it.

Cheers,

Mees

Thanks Mees I'll take it from here.

Okay, so basically the problem with that system is that its outdated, and no processers will even be made for 939 at the end of 2007. So buying a 939 system is a bad idea.

Since conroe comes out in less than one month, you should wate, and buy a conroe. The system will cost about the same as a AM2 system (actually a bit less) and will last you so much longer.

Heres what to buy.

Conroe CPU: Most likely the 2.3Ghz model. If you have deep pockets look at the 2.67Ghz

nF5 Conroe motherboard: Look at the ASUS board. Very promasing, cheap too.

7900GT: Grab a second one if you want SLi. The problem with the 7950GX2 is that the benchmarks and game tests put it half way between a 7900GTX and GTX SLi. Its a waste. You can get 2x 7900GTs for less, and have a better system.

Western Digital 258GB SATA3 w/ 16MB buffer: They are the newest drives and they are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. If you dont get one of the new WD drives you had better have a good excuse.

Sound card: None. The asus board has excellent sound built on.

2GB OCZ Platnum Edition DDR2-800: Clocks much better than the Corsair stuff does.

Hiper Type R PSU: There are three members on the forum that have them, and can tell you that they are amazing. 750W is going to be a bit overkill.

Well thats what you should look at. With all the otiher bits, that new system should cost just shy of $2000.

Cheers

I 'm going to agree with Cam here strictly on the basis of the quad SLI setup you are proposing... right now, the 7950 is a good card for a SINGLE card upgrade assuming your coming from a something lower than a 7900 gtx. If you are looking to build quad SLI, dont waste your money on these interm cards... wait for the DX10 Quad SLI cards. The money will be much better spent. In the mean time (between now and next year when dx10 is established) select a single card such as the x1900xtx, or the 7900GTX (512)

Right now is not a good time to buy... I would wait till the end of the year to look at what is out and what is coming up. I still think AMD will find a way to whomp conroe  http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32589  in either price or performance but even if that is not the case, waiting till the end of the year to spend the amount of money you are looking at would be a much wiser choice....

And PS: PC Power and Cooling is the ONLY CERTIFIED Quad SLI PSU @ 1000watts

??? You said you were upgrading in about 2 months

If your not upgrading for at least a year, the parts you choose will be outdated by then.

If you do choose to upgrade in 2 months with those parts your going to spend allot of money to be left behind on technology within a year or less.

Just thought I'd back that up. Perfect piece of kit, can't fault it.

For the benefit of Cam, I know why my first one failed: the 12cm fan at the bottom stopped working. Basically, it just overheated ::)

Unforunately it took the motherboard & graphics card (7800GT) with it, but all three were replaced under warranty. The only difference is I now have a 7900GT instead ;D 8)

WTH? What's next, inverted hyper-threading?

With a 5000+ priced at less than 1/2 the FX and practically the same performance along with AMD implementing RHT... The Return Of The Jedi is well on its way.

I knew AMD had something up their sleeves... besides, look at the new prices on all A64's as of Conroe's release
