External hard drive advice

Postby 61_OTU » Wed May 17, 2006 5:31 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking for advice on which external hard drive is a good bet.

I want 160-250 gig (more space the better)
I want to spend as little as possible - but still get something reliable and trustworthy
It would be nice if it came with some easy, idiot proof backup-everything-without-having-to-drag-and-drop-you-entire-C-drive backup software

I was looking at [url=http://www.ebuyer.co.uk/UK/product/109356
]this[/url]

or this

Any advice?

Well out of those two I like the WD My Book better, however take a look into the Maxtor One Tutch. I have sold like 10 in the past week alone, and havn't heard a single negitive thing about it.

But the one tutch does come with software that will make secuduled backups.

Cheers

You can buy a pair of 200gb or whatever size drives and create a RAID 1 mirrored array, which basically constantly writes two copies of your system drive (mirrors) at all times ........

I bought 3 Vantec E-Sata HDD cases and filled them with Seagate 250's. I have 2 computers upstairs and 1 down. With each computer having an E-Sata adapter (comes with the Vantec case) I can swap data between computers with ease. There are any number of backup programs that can be bought at a reasonable price if you want to use them for back-up storage.

The E-SATA drives are just like having the drive installed inside your computer and cheaper that buying an external drive.

Features
- Aluminum Casing Cools Down Your Hard Drive
- Transfer Rates Up to 3Gbps W/ eSATA
- Transfer Rates Up to 480Mbps W/ Usb 2.0 (12Mbps W/ USB1.1)
- Easily Add Storage to Any System With SATA or USB
- Hot-Swappable: Plug And Play Without Rebooting
- Attractive Blue LED Indicates Power/HDD Activity
- Supports Up to 400GB Hard Drives

I paid $60 CND and really like them
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
Intel I7 3770K w/ Corsair H100
Thermaltake Level 10 GT
Silverstone 1000W PSU

I don't understand why you require an external drive? The interface is often slower and its more junk on the desktop or shelf, just fit the drives in the case.

I've had some problems with the xp install on my pc, and want a means of copying the entire 120g hd before I Muck about with anything. The case has no space for a second (or third!) hd, so I need something which I can use for ongoing backup once the install is fixed. Once I'm happy that my data is safe outside the pc then I'll reinstall xp and create a second xp boot hd on a small spare hd, I've had a problem where mine would not boot and I've had to add it as a second hd on another xp machine to fix the hd errors.

Don't tell me to buy a new case ::) ;) I just want advice on usb/fw hd's ;)

Cheers
