confused. slightly older games

Postby Etienne62 » Sat Mar 04, 2006 2:16 pm

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could advise me here.
Could anyone tell me why games, that i played ok a couple of years ago are playing worse now than they did then? Even though my comp is slightly better than it was then.

I recently went back to playing SAR4 and vietnam medevac, and i had to turn the sliders down. Right down to 10% on medevac. I never had to do this before.
I even installed SAR3, and that played terrible, worse than SAR4!!

Only thing that i can think of that could have had an effect is that i've changed my graphics card since then, and added more ram. The graphics card now is an xfx geforce 6200 128mb. And fs2002 plays as it always did. (ok)Its just the other games mentioned above.

I'm wondering if its something to do with direct x or something. Like as if the games were meant to be run with an earlier version.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

My system.,
AMD Athlon 1700+
768mb ram.
geforce 6200 128mb.

Windows gets a bit slow after a while.  A clean install (format and reinstall) should fix the problem. ;)

No not joking.  Just back everything up.  Restart your comp and boot from XP cd.  Make sure you format.  Then install everything.  Install motherboard drivers first etc...

Well another thing that is often a problem is you didnt uninstall the first card from windows, you just pulled it out. If you still have it, put it in the AGP port and then tell windows to uninstall the device then take it out.

A clean format and re-install is always good for significant changes like GFX cards, motherboards, CPUs etc...

Ok Thanx Delta,

Let us know how it went.

Why don't you just start with a defrag of the HD and see if that doesn't sort it? A lot easier ;)

My thoughts exactly, a re-format is the easy way to solve a problem, 9 times out of 10, you encounter more serious issues once re-installing drivers etc.

;)

Thanx for your advice guys.
I do defrag my comp once a week, and i'm sure we uninstalled the old card before we put this one in. So i think i'll have to follow Delta's advice.
I'll let you all know how i get on, (providing i don't mess up the comp totally). Leave me your phone numbers just in case. LOL.

hmm you probobly played with alot lower FPS in the past but were used to it.  I used to play dos 3d games at about 10fps but never noticed it as games were jerky then and it was a fact of life.  Going back to them I can no longer play them due to getting headaches  :(
