I just don't care for twisty sticks.  That's not realistic.  No stick controlled plane I've ever seen has a twisty stick. pedals pedals pedals.

But if you can't afford, or don't have a set of pedals, then a 'twisty stick' is a huge improvement over using the keys.

& if you don't like the twist on the X52 then you simply pull out a tab at the bottom of the grip & it locks the stick in one place so that it dosen't twist.

Cheers,

Not only is a twisty stick a huge improvement over using keys, it's not a bad arangement in general for most things. It's intuative enough if you haven't spent ages on pedals to become used to them, and responsive... I've used pedals before, and if I ever get a flight yoke of course I'll pick up some pedals, but on a budget the twisty stick works fine...

...And as far as 'realism' goes... Realism is a sliding scale anyhow. It's not AS realistic as pedals, but neither is using a keyboard to adjust my flaps and fuel mixture and such. Nor is 'looking around' by flicking my thumb against a hat switch particularly realistic, or any number of other things I do in flight sim. In that light, the slight conession of twist-stick vs pedals is pretty minor, IMO.

...like Soul' says...
I use the Logitech Wingman Force 3D twist stick, (with force-feedback switched off), and it always seems completely natural for flying an aircraft, especially General Aviation aircraft..... and war-birds!.... ;)....!
...and it only cost....
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.
