Compiling, and sending Fax's by 'phone....?

Postby Fozzer » Mon Dec 19, 2005 10:04 am

Hello Lads...!

A bit more info needed... ;)...!

I have a US Robotics 56k, V92, Voice/Fax Modem which connects me to the Internet via my telephone line.
One of my lads can receive and print Fax's via his Broadband telephone line.
When I 'phone him, his 'phone rings 5 times, and if he doesn't pick it up to reply, it automatically switches over to receive Fax messages.
My question is....
How do I setup my computer to compile and send Fax messages to him....
Is there a program necessary to install and enable this, and is a special program similar to Outlook Express necessary to compile and send the text...?
Many thanks for any detailed info...;)...!

Cheers all...!

WinXP has a built-in fax function. Look in the control panel for printers and faxes. At the left hand side you'll see "set up faxing". Then run through the wizard. You'll need your XP disk to install the files.

I've never used it, but I believe you can just open up the fax program (should give you a desktop icon after you set it up), and then select the document you want faxed. It can be any text document -- nothing special needed. The setup wizard should run through how you want to send/receive faxes.

Hello Weather...!

Thanks for the link, via the Control panel...found it...!

...just got to figure out how to use it now... ;)...!

It appears as though I have to compile my text in Notepad/Wordpad first, print it out on the printer, then send it via the printer and my Modem...?
(A bit more complicated than I thought).... :'(

Hi Paul,
No need to print it first on paper.

The way we do it regularly, we write a letter/note in word, then go
1. File > print,
2. in resulting window click the arrow of "printer name" and you will see another printer called "Fax",
3. click it &
4. OK, then in resulting window
5. click next, type in name & fax number, ( I usually click on address book put it in there and then bring it up, so Ihave it for the future),
6. click "Add"
7. click Next
8. then I do not click for "cover Page" (you can make it)
9. Next
10. Next
11. Ither preview the fax, or
12. click finish and listen for the screeching.
Use the fax console icon for checking up on sent faxes etc.
Above look lengthy but only takes 2 - 3 seconds to send one.    Good luck

Very interesting but may I ask the advantage of sending a text message by Fax rather than E-mail?

I have a Fax modem but never used it as I don't know anyone with a Fax machine their end. My scanner has a Fax feature which would be more useful as you could send drawings & similar things over it.

I see one teeny-weeny little problem. I don't have a Fax machine either. :D

I can send 'em but I can't receive 'em. ;)

Hello, Doug...!

I had a long, hard think about this last night...
(I think the Viagra's finally working!)... ;D...!
Anyway...

My lad runs his own Hi-Tech business, and in common with other business's, they don't spend time waiting to receive, and read incoming e-mails.
...I fink wot 'appens...
Customers Fax them, with the result that they get an instant copy on their printer to view, and file if necessary...

My Lad seems to ignore my e-mails....but he cant ignore the clatter of his trusty printer if I Fax him the latest news of the various dubious goings-on with the Fozzer family, etc.... ;)...!
.....In fact, I could bury him under tons of A4 printed sheets of paper as a punishment for not replying to my phone calls and e-mails...
Tee-Hee... ;)...!

Cheers all...!

Paul,
ALSO, long ago with my old 3.2 USrobotic came their own faxing program "Quicklink" in w98, a much simpler way of faxing.

Unfortunately winXP will not have it, but if your USR has it & is newer & accepted by winXP, Quicklink may be easier for you.                   luke

Well, I was only trying to be helpful. ::) :P :D

I thought you could send the image over the Fax instead of the text message. Make a change if nothing else & prevent boredom setting in. I have no idea if it would work but if you don't try these things you never find out. ;D
