the FX-53 is caled the a64 4000 now.

The fx-55 broke 4 ghz many times already. I can come close with a vapochill system. You can achive about 4.6 ghz with a liquid  nitro system, but its only temporary. Plus, at that level, many times, you'll only get to the post screen.

You dont need an FX CPU, as long as you choose a socket 939 CPU, you'll be ok, just get the best you can afford, and shop around. The FX series can be ridiculously expensive in some parts of the world, $1229 is my best price here in Australia for the fx55, so, if I buy one, my family eats rice and water for six months. And then, I can think about a mainboard to suit it........ yeah..... right.

By contrast, a 3200+ (socket 939) costs $278 here, until prices get reasonable, 64 bit can sit on the backburner for me.

FX?    not likely.

For a quiet case take a look at the Antec Sonata. Considering  it comes with a 380 watt PSU  (with ample amps which is what counts usually) it was ideal for my new (Socket A) system. Very quiet and very affordable (Can$125.00)

The fact of the matter is that FX based systems, as any high end system, are aimed at the enthusiast market,(read money is no object), and don't represent value for money as a rule.

A slight step down in specification will produce a considerably cheaper system that still performs quite well.

The trick is to get a mainboard (chipset) that will support a later upgrade to the higher spec if it is later needed/wanted, when the upgrade will be much cheaper.

At the crazy pace at which the computer market is evolving, anything that's now a standard can become useless in a short span of time. So I will try to keep the option open to upgrade some components later, but I will not be surprised if it will prove to be a useless effort.

lol thats almost as bad as my old computer except mine was 166mhz cpu, 32mb ram, 8gb hard drive, 24x cd drive and 2mb graphics card.only got rid of it at christmas.

And I in turn remember when 170 KB was a reasonable (flopppy) disk size, and to double it (to an exceeding 340 KB!) you had to flip the disk over.
Before that, I remember when you had to load stuff from a regular C90 tape.
I am talking about the Commodore 64.
Now try to beat me!  ;D

PS: the C64 is still happily sitting on a desk in my house, still there, still working, and so do the tape unit and the floppy drive. And yes, I do own Sublogic Flight Simulator!  ;)
