File Transfer

Well as you know I just got a new PC, and I need to fill up the shiny new hard drive. The only problem is that I dont want to spend all the time copying files to CD, then to the new computer. I know of USB paralells but I cant seem to find them Bl**dy anywhere. Can I use Eathernet? Please help in any way that you can.

Yes you can use ethernet, here is a simple way I know:
1. Go to computer with the files and get the IP(Run>cmd>Ipconfig/all
2. Take that IP and go to your new computer and open up the run box and assume our IP is 192.168.1.10 and we want to get to C on the host type \\192.168.1.1\C$ and hit enter, in a few seconds you should see a window pop up with the host computers C drive. We do this a lot at LAN Parties to get games etc. GL

PS I hook up through the router and not the PC right

For 5-7 dollars at a radio shack you can get what is a crossover cable as well...;-) does basically the same thing without having to run anything...

That's what I used to use when we ony had two pc's networked together...then my dad and I could go flying all night long..

Any router will also do the job.

ya so heres what I did (got comp today) i just hooked up my comp to my linkseys router via Eathernet, got a message saying that a computer was added to the network. used serch to find my computer (new one) then just drag and drop.

I just put all my drives in removable bays and when I want to copy files over I just pull the drive from one computer and stick it in the other.

Just in case someone still uses Win9x, the above method can not work because there are no administrative shares (like C$) in Win9x. With Windows 9x you must install File and printer sharing, and enable file sharing, on the PC that will act as server. Then you'll have to share the C: drive. And of course Client for MS Networks must be installed both on client and on server.
You can directly plug the two computers if you are not on a LAN, but you'll need an Ethernet crossed cable, a regular straight one will not do it. And you should also ensure that both computers share a network protocol (for Win9x NETBEUI was the way to go because it needed no further configuration; with TCP/IP ensure that both boxes are on the same logical network, say 192.168.1.0, same subnet mask, say 255.255.255.0, and that they are set up with different addresses, say 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2).
