Space... the final frontier

  New (second) HD! Just getting started, but eventually I want to only have applications on the old 40GB HD (that 20+ GB used section is already mostly programs), and use the big boy for photos, videos,music, backups, etc.  I had to make a partition to format it, but I'm not gonna cry over only having 186GB left over...should be enough for a while!  ;)


   Question: would it be  worthwhile (or wise) to keep FS9 files like Saved Flights, etc. on the second drive? I'm trying to optimize game performance, so if doing so would cause lags in load time of saved flights, I guess it wouldn't be worthwhile. Anybody have any insight?
BTW: Also got another 512 RAM; now just shy of 1GB. Can't wait to start tweaking FS9!!

Haven't tallied them lately, but I recently had to burn a bunch of CDs to get them off that 40GB HD just so I could rip a movie. I recently scanned all my old prints, and am currently working on ripping all my LPs, 45s, and casssettes... so I need lots of room, at least for temp. storage. I may leave most of the photos off the HD (except the ones that still need editing), but I will probably leave quite a few music files on there so I can heve them handy for listening...
My FS9 folder is only about 9GB so far, but yeah, if it gets too bulky I may have to shift it over.

only 9GB? The last time I checked, mine was approaching 3GB, and I thought I had a lot of downloads! If I were you, I would use one drive specifically for FS, then put everything else on the other one.

Checked again... don't know where I got 9GB from. It's more like 4.
If it does approach 9, I may very well give it its own drive.

I leave the computer on for about 2 days straight to defrag. I move files around a lot as well as doing read/write intensive tasks all day.

I have a 250 gig Sata drive that only spins at 7500rpm.  It is formatted as NTFS structure.

I only keep games on this drive so there isn't much data transfer (Like auto says he moves stuff a lot and this is what makes it messy)

I de-frag my games drive once a week and it takes a maximum of half hour!  If you keep it clean then it shouldn't take to long at all.

Any drive you do a lot of data transfering on though will possibly take longer due to how quickly it can become untidy, this is partly why I have a seperate games HDD and one for junk stuff (80gig PATA one for vids/pics etc)

I'm trying not to think about it. But I'm pretty tidy so far; shouldn't be too bad. Most of the stuff that'll go on there will be sort of in "deep storage"... music, images, etc., too, which should keep the orphaned and corrupted fragments down to a minimum.
Whatever... the main reason I got such a beast is because in addition to the aforementioned filetypes, I want to rip a bunch of VHS tapes to make DVDs out of them. Those files are massive! After I've edited them and burned a disc, I'll probably dump them off the HD, keeping most of it free... well, we'll see.

I bet its FAT32.

Another darn good reason to partition into smaller drives.

You have plenty of space, copy your whole FS9 setup to the spare drive as a backup, including the files in my docs. I would even copy the whole C:/program files folder there, and see what runs from that location, just for fun!  :D

Hi Paul!  ;) The reason that your taking so long is probably because of being on 98. Whenever i defrag my parents Intel Tortoise 500mhz / 13Gb IDE it take hours.
My XP / 160Gb SATA takes all of 10 mins! It must be somehting to do with it!  ;)

20 Gb is a very small HD for the typical PC these days Paul. One benefit for partitioning a large HD & having FS9 or any other sim on a different drive or partion to your OS. Windows creates temp files every time you go online or use a program. Both creating & removing these files also causes fragmentation. Try going online for a few minutes & visit the forum. Then go offline & check your fragmentation. You might be surprised. Having these programs on a separate drive causes less of this mess & less fragmentation. You can defrag each drive or partion separately.

I mess around with a lot of large image files (photos from my digital camera etc) & treated myself to an 80 Gb portable HD. These were on special offer at PC World & about the same price as a similar capacity conventional HD. I use this for all my images & backing up files in case my drive fries as happened once before. This is twice the size of the 40 Gb drive installed to my PC. It's also very handy for transferring files from one PC to another one.
