New PC Part Two...

Postby Dan » Sat Jan 22, 2005 6:08 am

Hey guys! My new PC's spec is in my siggy now... Anyway, I have tested it, got 15000 in 3dMark01, and 6000 in 3DMark 03. I expected more, but I can run FS2002 Maxed out locked at 50FPS  ;D and DOOM3 in Ultra High Detail mode flawlessly!  8) Only trouble with Doom is that I used it and scared myself SH1TLE$$! I know its rated 18 but It came with the machine!... oh well.... no matter!  :o  ;)

Last night I was making my siggy picture, playuing music and I had a look at PC Wizard 2004. Bam! PC Restarts itself... I thought it was my temperature, whcih was set to shutdown at 60C. I booted again, looked at my temps, and it was in the red at 41C! Thats a fine temp tho init? I thought you guys where running at 50C+? Im putting it down to a bug in PC Wiz... I tested it this morning in 3DMark03 and it only went up to 41C, so I think its ok. How hot should it get before I panic?

This is my temp monitor thing straight after Mark03:

Oh and thanks Ben, for your words of encouragment.
Dan

(Happy!   ;D) ;)

Your pics are easy to fix.  change the extensions to capital letters, i.e. JPG & GIF.

What is PC Wizard?  If your system was unstable I would expect it to reset when Benching.  Aim for a maximum temp of 50C under load.

Have you altered your ram timings at all or attempted to overclock?

What are your BIOS settings, have you chosen the 'Optimised' settings?
AMD64 3500+ @ 2200MHz 400FSB
MSI K8N Neo 2 mobo nForce3 chipset
1gig Corsair XMS PC3200 timings @ 10.2.2.2
XFX 6800 Ultra @ 450/1200
80gig HDD

Ahh thanks Gixer I think the pics are fixed! lol... PC Wizard is a thing that tells you 'whats in the box'. I checked there site and they have an issue with some '64 processors. So that was what it was. Its not Oc'd, I have changed the BIOS a little, but Im SURE thats not it. It goes certainly no higher than 45C during benchmark - thats with a large heatsink + fan, and a 120mm case fan!! Loverly....

Out of interest, whats the best upgrade i could do:

A) At all
B) for under

Noo It certainly dont NEED upgrading... and I don't have the cash yet, Ive still got to earn it!! lol... I was thinking of adding one of those 10000rpm Raptor SATA drives... I can run DOOM Maxed out, but it takes about 30seconds (!) to load... Would it make that faster?

A little faster yes.  I have a 40gig 10000rpm hdd for my OS and main progs.  Data transfer is very quick so is deleting files etc.

first (free) improvement: shutdown temp can be set to 75C (minimum) or to the max of 85C (which is what the usual max temp for AMD will be)

where is the 'PWM IC' sensor located? is it the one that is mounted under the cpu socket?

Extra upgrades:
i personally would have waited for a SLI capable PCI-E board, and from a better known manufacturer (ASUS)

Why will setting the shutdown temp make it any better? Ive got it set at 60 with no problems now. Like i said it was the program bug doing it.
As for the board, I didnt know the manafacturer. But if you search a few forums ( I Did) then most responses are 'best board i have ver owned'. I agree. But PCI-e does sound V good!

You dont have a bad mobo at all.  The DFI boards are meant to be very good, and are a good base for overclocking on too.  I was thinking of getting a DFI mobo next too.

As for getting a raptor. I would get one but just keep your OS and main progs on it.  Put all your games onto your other drive.  You ideally want your OS on the fastest drive.

Yeah, from what I have seen of the board its one hell of a thing!!! Looks nice too, comes with its own swithces on the board.
I have got the AMD cooler on the chip, and a 120mm fabn blowing out of the back of the case. If i can get the raptor then should i put in another at the front, as theres a bracket for it. And is it possible to OVER cool a system?

How can i find where this PWM IC thing is anyway? And what is it?
Thanks Gix...  ;D

I have no idea where your mobo's temp sensor is I am afraid, it might say in your mobo manual though.

As for cooling, it can never be cool enough, well unless its that cool that condensation starts forming which is obviously very bad with electrics around!  This wont ever happen with air cooling though.
