TFT or CRT?

Postby MWISimmer » Tue Jan 18, 2005 4:51 pm

Hi all,

Subject says it all!

I've bought a new base unit, (specs below), it's a very fetching grey as opposed to the off white of our old unit.
Which means i need a new monitor. The white 17" 1999 monitor looks a bit out of place now..
Now I can spend up to

For now, I think that it is best to get a CRT monitor, as their refresh rates and maximum resolutions are superior to those of the TFT monitors, meaning that they are perfect for gaming and for surfing the web.

Cheers,

Rob :)

I think TFTs are fine now - Given the choise I would go for a TFT. I use a sharp (20ms) LCD (not the fastest right!) and don't have any problem at all - can't imagine that these new 8-16ms panels have any trouble at all. Choosing one is mighty difficult mind you!

PS. I can't even look at our dell CRT without getting sore eyes now :o

Agreed the quick response monitors dont get the ghosting problem but I play all games at 1600x1200.

The cheapest tft monitor at that resolution is about
AMD64 3500+ @ 2200MHz 400FSB
MSI K8N Neo 2 mobo nForce3 chipset

I use both. Here's the download:

CRT: +
-Fast
-Cheap
-High res (16 by 12 and I have ones that are higher that are still cheaper than TFT)
-good color
-best contrast (can't be beat, not even by plasma's)

CRT: -
-Big
-Burn-in, still is a problem, screensavers should do the job, plus most crt have a standby mode
-Needs high refresh rates.
-Power consumming

TFT: +
-Small
-Power-saving
-Decent Spatial uniformity

TFT: -
-Exspensive
-Dead pixels (this can be a huge problem if you get it)
-high-res at steep price in both money and response time
-contrast (the liquid crystalls can't be become completely opague)

TFT note: Response times are down by a lot. My 17" has a 9ms response time and a screen res of 12 by 10 (SXGA). HOwever, higher res TFT's are much slower with the slowest being 16 ms and trust me from experience 16 ms is not good for gaming.

19" TFT will only do 1280x1024 I am afraid so if you want higher it wont be any good.

Stick with your original plan, get a decent CRT!  there are also different pitches available with CRT's I got a Grille pitch on mine think that has somthing to do with why the image quality is so good.
