I read a test report on the 64 bit 3200+ (socket 754!)that said it was outperforming AMD's most expensive cousins with more level 2 cache in several tests.
I'm still not familiar with the Centrino's or any of the "newname" CPU's, but I don't think anything out there is much better than a 64bit XP at any price.
You seem pre-occupied with CPU's when you should be looking at chipsets and what they can offer you in the way of processor support and other features.
The way I see it, it's difficult to get what you want in a laptop, mainly because they are generally not very configurable at point of purchase.
