Yes the X600 is ATI's answer to the 6600. However its doing poor in benchmarks. ATI released an X700 as well which is equal the the 6600 but is outpreformed by the 6600GT.
Guru 3d did a basic stack up of the new cards using the Doom3 Benchmark at 1024x768res with no AA. Here's the top new cards in order from best to worst. Guru3d is non-biased when it comes to rating cards. These rankings are pretty even across the board. I put the average frame rate for the best and worst. The standard 6600 wasn't included because they haven't had a chance to test it yet.
-Geforce 6800 Ultra Extream 105.6fps
-Geforce 6800 Ultra
-Geforce 6800GT
-Radeon X800XT Platinum
-Geforce 6800
-Geforce 6600GT
-Radeon X800 pro
-Radeon X700 XT
-Radeon 9800 XT
-Geforce FX5950
-Radeon 9800 Pro 128
-Geforce 5900 Ultra
-Radeon 9700 Pro
-Geforce FX5700 Ultra
-Radeon 9600 XT
-Radeon X600 XT 24.4fps
Looks like the tables have turned in the graphics card war putting nVidia on top with ATI getting the short end of the stick. I'd suggest going with the Geforce 6600GT or Radeon X800 pro if you don't want to spend a lot. The 6600GT AGP isn't out yet but it will be soon.
