...after the problems of running out of memory with my programs in Win '98SE...
I just had a word today with my PC retail guru, (he who knows about everything PC related... ;D...), with reference to installing more than 512 Mb of memory in Win '98SE...
"No problemo with 768 Mb of memory", he says, "..but don't install 1 giga-byte, 'cos the puter won't recognise it".... ;)...!
So...
I thrust
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

As an observation, my old MOBO ASUS A7A266 did not use the additional 512 MB RAM installed.  My new MOBO DFI NFII 400-AL does use a portion of the additional 512 MB RAM.  Could usage be related to the chipset nForce2?

I was using an ECS K7S5A, then a Asus A7S333. Both were SIS chipsets. (both were slow in comparison to comparable specs as well)

In terms of performance in FS9, what has a greater impact?  Vid card on-board ram or system ram?  I noticed after upgrading to XP on my 2.09 athlon that the 512meg i had been using on my old p3 800 wasn't rendering FS2002 as smoothly on the faster XP system as it had on my slower 98 system.  So, I added another 256meg and now have very fluid performance with FS2002 save for a few notable planes such as the 747rfp.  That tends to be a tad mushy in Vcockput view.  Now, I am running FS9 and while it works in a usable manner it does tend to much up a bit in the Vcockpit view ot whenever there is weather being rendered.  So, I am wondering, upgrade the vid card from 64meg ati7200 to a 128meg 9800 or break the 1 gig barrier in ram?  What do you all say?

AMD 2800+ 2.09g

The graphics card, by far.  I was using a Radeon 7000 32MB before, this allowed low settings with a few at medium, i upgraded to a 9600xt and can run FS9 maxed out, 30FPS locked.

Hi Birdman...!
Thanks for this little beauty....

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It works a treat and allows me to select which programs I want to load at "Start up"...(the list always seems to get longer by the minute... :o....)...LOL...!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As a matter of interest, whenever I manually shut down programs running in the back-ground, (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), I always leave "Explorer" and "Systray" running.
What actually are these two programs, and can they also be shut down, or are they vital for Windows to work...?

Cheers all... ;D....!

Paul.

P.S. I've just been presented with a sooper-dooper Phillips 17 inch 170C4 LCD flat screen monitor... 8)...!
...arn't I a lucky bunny... ;D...!
(I can see the text on the screen clearly now...)... ;D...!
I could take a photo of it, and post it here, but I'm not the sort of person to inflict pain upon others... ;)...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

I was risking getting a hernia lumping my old 17 inch CRT monitor around... :'(...!
LOL...!

Explorer is very vital, trying to close that will only bring up the shutdown, Restart, etc... menu.  Shutting down systray can make the system unstable, sometimes it does not , but other times it can cause a crash either straight away or later on.  It uses minimal resources so i would keep it on for stability.
