Postby dicksite » Sat Mar 13, 2004 9:16 am

:-/ Hi
A newbe here..  Trying to help a friend upgrade his pc. Currently pc has onbroard graphics..Like to upgrade to an add in card..Is't doable ?? and if so do we need to disable onbroard graphics in the the BIOS and if so how  do we do this ???????Current setup shares pc mem upto 8meg, not a good idea for running a CFS game sooooooooo ;D soooooooooo please someone help us.

We've been to the web site for HP/Compaq but only got standard stuff like disabling drivers but when we put in the card (a PCI unit, it was a gift) all we got was a black screen  :'( not good..The new card is a Nvida GEforce2MX 400 w/64 meg...it has to be better than the current intregated stuff right ??????????????

If you have an AGP slot that would be good, if not you need a pci graphics card.

There different ways to disable the onboard GFX card.  The first and most common way is to look in your motherboard manual or diagram, and find a jumper which can be set to disable it.  The jumpers are on the motherboard.  Sometimes you need to switch quite a few jumpers.  If you have a jumperless motherboard, which by the sound of it you don't, you go into the bios and into the hardware section and simply turn it off.

If you can't find the manual, you can look on the motherboard and see if the jumpers are labelled.  I am not sure what the label will be but it will be related to the word Graphics card, like "graphics", "video" or other words that could be used.

;D  You reckon?  ;D

Wouldn't it be pleasant for us all if mainboard jumpers were clearly labeled!

Older mainboards used jumpers, newer ones tend to use BIOS, Some are both.

Look the board up in Google search.

The GF2 MX400 is gonna be slow, but yes it will be an improvement, providing you find an agp slot to put it in.

Look in the hardware section and scroll down to graphics than press + or - to enable/disable it.  Then save and exit.  Turn your pc off and put the new card in and start up the comp.  It is often a good idea to remove the old graphics drivers from windows before you do all this.  Just use the add/remove programs program to do this.
