someone please help, multiplayer wont connect

I recently upgraded my system to broadband dsl. Since then I cannot connect to anyone elses IP, I have talked to microsoft and they say I have blocked ports, and they cant tell me how to fix it, has anyone else experienced this problem and how did you fix it.

Do you have a router connected to your machine to connect you to broadband?

No I dont have a router and my firewall is down.
