Why did you partition the HDD ?

Knowing the reason for the partition would dictate what you put and why you put it there.

If just to have a D: drive, then it really doesn't matter. It's completely up to you.. as long as you remember where every application is when running, adding to or upgrading it.

The only time I've found the need to partition a drive..it was important enough to warrant purchasing a completely seperate HDD..  They're awfully cheap right now and partitioning opens a drive managment can of worms.

I have partitioned for years and the reason is this.....first my partitioning, then it will all make sense...
With a 40 gig drive I will partition 5 for the 'C" drive to hold the operating system and all related stuff...."D" will be 30 or two 15's(these are for data, apps, and all non OS-critical things) and the balance will be allowed for an image of the pristine operating system which was mirrored once the system is up and running.....this way, I can have all my apps and data separated from the OS and a format of the

Agreed (to point)   ;)

All that logical ordering of stuff can be done with normal drive hierarchy... without ever having to trick a HDD into thinking it's more than one.

Critical data (including a pristine O/S installation-image) can be archived to CD's.

If, for some reason (dual boot is the only real reason that comes to mind) you need more than one HDD designation...  again, they're so darn cheap and reliable, it's best to just get another.   IMHO
