Looking for a possible Vid Card upgrade...

Postby Eric_Rose » Fri Aug 01, 2003 11:41 am

Okay, here's the deal, I have an Xtacy GeForce4 Ti 4600 128 MB DDR on the card...P4 2.0ghz...512mb DDR...and soundblaster LIVE! sound card and running XP Home. Is there a better Video card out there for me???
If so...what would be better???
Thx for the help!

Eric that aren't cards much better than this, certainly not for the dough involved. You could get an ATI9700 but the difference in performance is v.marginal.
I've got a Ti4600 and its great. Also you have to consider the speed of your machine as well...

There are better cards around now - the GeForce fx series.

Personally though, I wouldn't be buying anything less than a Geforce fx 5900 ultra. The earlier cards like the 5600 have to many issues, and even Nvidia themselves were quoted as saying "We stuffed up".

The 5900 Ultra is quite expensive, but if money is no object then well worth it.

Just remember it is an 8xAgp card (as are most these days) so you won't see the full performance of it unless your mobo is 8 x AGP.

I have the same card as you, have only just upgraded to my new Gigabyte GA 7N400 Nforce 2 Ultra 400 Dual DDR 8xAGP mobo and my results are outstanding.

Getting around 16,500 3d Marks with settings at medium. I will be buying the new card, but not for a couple of months until the price drops.

My advice is to get yourself another stick of 512mb DDR - Windows xp is known for showing it's true colours once you hit that 1 gig mark.

Direct X 9 optimized (ATI) vs. Direct X 8 optimized (Ti 4600) plus a higher performance (ATI). and the ATI card costs just about US $ 250.
