When it comes to comparing to FSX, yes indeed XPlane is much better on absolutely all aspects.

I would recommend you to give a try to the XPlane demo: it's the same as the full sim, but it's limited to a relatively small area around Portland and 20 minutes per session. After 20 minutes, your controls stop responding and you simply have to restart the sim. Also, you can install addon planes or any other kind of addons on that demo.

The main strong points of XPlane compared to FSX are:
- better default ground textures
- better and more dense autogen (I recommend you to try to fly at night over a dense city, it's spectacular)
- better performance over big cities and airports
- no need to tweak to get the best performance out of your hardware
- 3D clouds and more modern graphics engine in general
- excellent flight/physics model
- regular updates from the developpers.

The main drawback is that you will have to relearn everything from a usability perspective: keyboard shortcuts, configuration screens, how to install addons etc... For people like us that always used the MS sims and went from FS9 to FSX, having to relearn all the basic controls can be a bit frustrating. But in the end, it's quite rewarding and well worth the effort.

Says one person's opinion. Better in what regard? FSX is 2006 tech, and you're comparing it to what XPlane version? The lack of airport sceneries and global sceneries was always a deal breaker for me when I compared XPlane ... in 2006. And that whole cult of personality thing gets old fast. I don't worship at the shrine of Saint Austin. FSX is better for my flightsim preferences: abundant third-party add-ons and a huge selection of civilian and military planes, payware and freebies.

Says one person's opinion.

Well, in that case it's not really "one person's opinion" but more like an actual comparison based on users feedback over all major forums (not counting my own experience).

Better in what regard?

All, as written previously. Physics, graphics, ATC, weather engine etc...

FSX is 2006 tech, and you're comparing it to what XPlane version?

To the current XPlane version, which is XPlane 12 obviously. A user wondering if he should consider trying XPlane today is not aiming at trying or buying and old version, but the current one, don't you think ?

The lack of airport sceneries and global sceneries was always a deal breaker for me when I compared XPlane ... in 2006.

Yes indeed, but that is an outdated comparison. Today, when comparing FSX to XPlane, you have to compare FSX Steam edition with XPlane 12. And XPlane comes with something called the "scenery gateway" which makes it include many community-created airports/airfields directly in its default scenery, which is a great thing and a nice improvement over FSX default scenery, making another reason to promote it to users who are wondering about it.

And that whole cult of personality thing gets old fast. I don't worship at the shrine of Saint Austin.

Neither do I. That won't prevent me from recognizing the strong points and advantages of his sim, though.

FSX is better for my flightsim preferences: abundant third-party add-ons and a huge selection of civilian and military planes, payware and freebies.

And this is also valid for XPlane.
